After that, you might think you’re an expert when it comes to American women and what to expect when you are about to date one of them. Needless to say, almost half of that is rubbish and you can’t put a whole nation in the same basket. If you are a British expat living in the state or perhaps you know an exchange student or American living in UK, you should know these 10 essential things to expect. Here’s tips for how to date an American woman:
They love a “British” accent, which in reality is the southern accent or the received pronunciation you hear on the BBC. If you’re from somewhere in the North, you won’t be as lucky. If you are, there’s a great chance she won’t shut up about how endearing you sound whenever you talk — the ultimate ego-boost.
Most of them are very opinionated and have strong ideas on topics such as gender-equality, politics and even religion. So don’t be alarmed when they bring any of those topics into the conversation. Freedom of speech, like in the UK, is a right, but for them is much more personal. The first thing to bear in mind is not to be alarmed, keep your mind open and listen to their opinions.
Let’s be honest, you either hate America, love it or thing is a batshit crazy place. Their country is not perfect and ours definitely isn’t (looking at you Brexit). Your date or prospective girlfriend didn’t send American troops to Iraq and didn’t post obnoxious tweets slamming a certain Korean leader. Tone down your criticism or save them for much later.
Reality shows, celebrities, make-up and selfies, those things unfairly related to American women. Stereotypes are ugly, abundant and untrue. All nations are plagued with myths and ideas that don’t apply to every single person. You shouldn’t think you have an American woman all figured out because of her nationality.
Another stereotype. American women are not “easier” than other women; discard that idea from now on. It is true that, in some cases, they’re more comfortable flirting and expressing their sexuality than European women. You can expect fresh views on sex and lots of positivity.
Unless you’ve been living in a hole, you might already know millennial Americans are mostly pro-feminism and independent spirit. It’s likely your girl won’t hesitate to put herself first and do what she pleases at any time without feeling apologetic.
We like to say we, as a society, are honest and direct to each other, but, in reality, we aren’t. This is painfully obvious when you meet an American person, instead of opting for subtlety or avoiding awkward situations, they won’t hesitate in telling you what they think, even if it’s not what you want to hear. So don’t think the girl you’re dating is bossy or loud; it’s simply a matter of different mentalities.
Pretty much like with accents, American women are delighted with our “politeness”. Our social ticks, the “excuse me’s” and “sorry’s” are, for some reason, incredibly charming in their eyes. Be polite, but remember not to overdo it, otherwise, you’ll end up being some posh, Victorian character.
Who doesn’t love being complimented? It’s not just American DNA, a good compliment grants you bonus points from that person. Don’t just fixate on her appearance, try out saying something special about her personality or what they enjoy doing.
Don’t pretend to be the perfect English gentleman à la Tom Hiddleston or an American patriot, just be your genuine self. Show your sensitive side (definitely a plus) and speak about your beliefs, hobbies and aspirations.
