10 Free Things To Do Around Newcastle University

One of the best things about Newcastle is the number of interesting things there are to see and do in such a short distance. The even better thing? Many of them won’t cost you a penny, which for students on a budget, makes this wonderful place so accessible and easy to get to know. If you’re not sure where to start, here’s a useful guide to some of the best places to discover: Take a look at the 10 best free things to do around Newcastle University.

1. Take a stroll along the Quayside

Newcastle Quayside is the perfect place to go if you want to stretch your legs after a long day working in the Robbo. The Millennium and Tyne bridges are two of the most recognised Newcastle landmarks- and provide amazing Instagram opportunities! Alternatively, Sunday mornings are a great time to visit to cure Saturday’s hangover, as the weekly Quayside Market offers a wide variety of delicious foods.

2. Learn something new at a local museum

Newcastle has a multitude of museums and galleries, and most them don’t charge for admission! The Great North Museum is located just seconds from campus, there is really no excuse not to visit. It frequently hosts events and seasonal exhibitions, including a Planetarium in the winter months. If you fancy learning a bit more about Newcastle and Tyneside’s history, The Discovery Museum has three floors of exhibitions to explore, charting Newcastle’s history.

3. Go for a wander through Jesmond Dene…

If you’re in need of a study break, or just fancy a stroll in the fresh air, Jesmond Dene offers a quiet and serene place to do so. The best thing about the Dene is its ability to make you forget you’re even in the city, making it the perfect place to unwind, job or explore with friends.

A great place to go if you’re missing your family pet! People of all ages are welcome, combined with a walk down the Dene or a trip to the Jesmond Food Market, this makes for a great day out!

5. Discover somewhere new, with a walk along Ouseburn

Tucked away from the bustle of the city centre, Ouseburn is the perfect place to go for a wander, if you’re feeling trapped in Jesmond or student halls. The river leads you past numerous fantastic pubs and music venues including The Ship, The Cluny, Tyne Bar and The Free Trade Inn. If you’re not looking to splash out on pints, Ouseburn Farm is definitely worth a visit!

6. Enjoy a classic film with friends

If you’re a film fan, The Tyneside Cinema is a great place to discover! The Sunday Brunch Club features a FREE screening of a classic film every Sunday and has a delicious brunch menu. 7. Appreciate the best views of Newcastle’s at the Baltic

Technically in Gateshead, but only a stone’s throw from the Millennium Bridge, the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art is a must for all modern art fans out there. Even if you’re not into the art, a visit to the top floor will reveal one of the best views of Newcastle and the Tyne.

8. Go for a stroll along the city walls

Not many students are aware of Newcastle’s walls, dating back to the 13th century, it’s worth going to see such a historical landmark. Not only is this a chance to see some sites, but also a chance to get out in the fresh air.

9. Explore the Grainger Market

Crammed with delicious foods and true Geordies, this is a great place to people watch and find interesting and local products. You don’t need to spend money to enjoy browsing the stalls, although you’ll want to! (If you’re willing to break the ‘no spend’ rule, a £2 slice of pizza from Slice is HIGHLY recommended). This is one of the best free things to do around Newcastle University.

 

10. Get an insight into northern life at the Side Gallery

One of Newcastle’s true hidden gems. Tucked away near the Quayside, the gallery exhibits documentary photography, aimed at documenting the lives of working class and marginalised northern communities. A fabulous place to visit if you enjoy photography and want to learn more about the North of England.
