Female Led Shows On Netflix You Should Be Binge Watching

Bored of the same old shows and need more female led shows to binge watch on Netflix? Check out these awesome shows you need to get on!

Representation and diversity is so important for television, and Netflix has some amazing female-led shows lined up for you to binge! You’ll absolutely fall in love with these characters and get completely hooked on the story lines.

Glow

Glow is a serious favourite of mine – funny, moving and iconic 80s fashion, what’s not to love? This female led show centres on a group of women part of a women’s wrestling organisation in Los Angeles in the 1980s. With two seasons on Netflix and a third on the way there is plenty for you to binge watch, and trust me, once you start it’ll be hard to stop. This shows features a diverse cast of women from all different backgrounds. A large part of the show’s story line is main character Ruth and her best friend Debbie, whose friendship takes a turn for the worst after events in the first episode (which I won’t reveal so you’ll have to watch it!) and I love how the show really delves into the intricacies of their friendship.

Derry Girls

If you’re not watching Derry Girls, you’re missing out on a hilariously funny, yet poignant female led sitcom. Set in Northern Ireland during The Troubles, the show centres around a group of high school friends trying to navigate life in a world of armed police, bomb scares and army check points. The writing is absolutely brilliant, their friendship is effortlessly sweet and the one liners are killer. With only six episodes in the first season, you can quickly binge it just in time for season 2!

Jane The Virgin

Jane the Virgin takes drama to a whole new level! This female-led show is centred around Jane, a 23-year-old student and writer (and virgin, in case you couldn’t tell from the title) who is accidentally artificially inseminated at what was supposed to be a routine check up. And yes, it somehow does get more crazy from there! With Jane, her mother and her grandmother, the show features three generations of Latina women, each with meaningful characterisation and stories. And with their culture so beautifully woven into the show, through language, customs and traditions, Jane the Virgin is also contributing to greater representation for cultural diversity on television.

Chewing Gum

Chewing Gum is a British comedy created by, written by and starring Michaela Cole (how’s that for impressive?).  Smart, touching and hilariously funny, it is one of the few shows out there that can be truly claimed as unique. It centres around the main character Tracey who, having grown up in a very religious family, wants to learn more about the world. Chewing Gum has two seasons with six half-hour episodes in each, so it won’t take long to binge watch!

Orange is the New Black

This female-led show is an absolute classic, and with six seasons under their belt, there is plenty to binge-watch before the seventh and final season. Set in a women’s prison, the show centres around lead character Piper Chapman adjusting to life behind bars. Not only is Orange is the New Black a super successful show with binge-worthy twists and turns throughout the plot, but it features an incredibly diverse cast with women from all walks of life. Also, none of the characters are reduced to a stereotype which is all too common when it comes to female characters. Instead, this show features meaningful characters and stories that deal with important social, gender and racial issues.
