Never having lived in a university town, I didn’t know what to expect. I had only seen one city prior on an open tour day. Little did I know, this guide had shown me all my soon-to-be regular spots. I didn’t know the looming trees and rustling leaves would comfort me on my usual walks home.
Your uneven streets make me wonder if being “swallowed by the ground” was a metaphor for embarrassment. I quickly learned. Before I knew it, I was learning everything: shortcuts, the pieces of pavement that would break and what routes to take when I was running late to class.
I loved our time together; the memories of being holed up in restaurants with friends while complaining about assignments and talking about boys on park benches. We’d get drunk and eat pizza on the floor of our flats at 3 a.m. too. I will miss the drunken chants of fresher in the early morning, the omnipresent sound of seagulls as I walked to uni in the morning and buying coffee at The Artisan.
There’s not a lot of places you can say you became your own person. You were the place I shopped for decor for my first real place. It’s been a roller coaster and one I’ve enjoyed. While I think there’s more to find out about you, I know one thing for sure; it’s been real.
