How To Make An Old Mirror Chalkboard

An easy - and affordable! - step by step guy on how to make an old mirror chalkboard! The perfect DIY to decorate your home!

This is a really cute idea that I’ve seen on a couple of different blogs now. You take an old mirror, either one lying around your house or one from a thrift store, and spruce it up by turning it into a chalkboard! A perfect decoration for your house or dorm room. And it’s easy and cheap to make. Read on for how to create your own old mirror chalkboard!

You Need:

  • Old Mirror
  • Chalkboard Paint
  • Paint for the frame if you want
  • Sand Paper (if you’d like)
  • Masking Tape (if you’d like)

First you can distress the wood of the frame if you’d like, using the sand paper. This step isn’t necessary, it’s just about how you want your chalkboard to look.

Then, if you want to use primer, you paint that first. Primer also isn’t necessary, and most of the articles I’ve read don’t use it, but it’s up to you. Then it’s time to paint the mirror with the chalkboard paint. You’ll want to do a few layers, waiting until it’s dry to add a new one, until it achieves the black color you’re looking for.

Now it’s time to paint the outside. You can do this step before painting the inside, but it doesn’t really matter either way. For whichever way you paint it, if you are going to use masking tape to keep from painting the wrong thing, make sure any paint you’ll be putting it on is dry, so you don’t end up taking it off.
