Top 15 Ways To Maintain Your Long Distance Relationship

Being in a relationship during college means that their is also a likely chance that at some point it may become a long distance relationships. Having people attending your school from all over the state, country or even globe, means their is a chance that they do not live too close to your hometown. Or maybe you are a senior in High School and your significant other will not be going to school remotely close to you. Whether it sometime as short as winter break or long as life after graduation, you may find yourself in a long distance relationship. I have been in a long distance relationship before and I know sometimes that it can get hard when all you want to do is give them a hug, but it also has some upsides. Here are 15 ways to maintain your long distance relationship.

1. Set out rules and a plan before hand

Before leaving each other it is important to set out rules of what you “expect” of each person. For instance, are you two exclusive? Is it alright for the other person to go on dates? What is your commitment level?

2. Have a goal in mind.

Doing a long distance relationship can be tough, and you don’t want to do it just for fun. Where do you guys see yourself when you are back together? Do you want to live in the same city? Get married? Have children? Or are you fine with no plan?

3. Communicate daily.

Time zones can be tricky and you might both have hectic schedules but put in the effort to communicate daily! A simple exchange of good morning and good night texts can do wonders for you two. It’s a simple gesture that reminds the other person they are your first and last thought of the day, regardless of the busy lives you both lead in the middle. In today’s age, there’s no excuse not to reach out and let them know they are on your mind. So go ahead, text them “I’m thinking of you.”

4.  Do not communicate too much.

Yes, it is always important to communicate, but you do not have to be blowing up each others phones or social media. Both of you still need time to yourself.

5. Write personalized letters.

It may be 2017, but their is nothing wrong with going the old-fashioned. We are all so use to receiving a million texts that take a few seconds to type. Take the time to write your significant other a personal letter, it could go a long way.

6. Plan a phone call, Skype or Facetime session once a week!

Make time for each other. Since an LDR lacks many physical aspects, all you two have to rely on is communication, it is what keeps the bond between the two of you strong. So find time once a week that works with both of your schedules, and put it aside for a virtual date! Whether you talk about anything and everything, watch a show on Netflix together, or simply just enjoy each other’s presence, nothing compares to getting to hear their voice again.

7. Do things together.

Just because you live miles away does not mean that you cannot have fun. You can make video chat dates with each other by having dinner at the same time or watching the same movie.

8. Send photos!

Photo apps like snapchat help to make this super easy. We are increasingly a visual culture, especially our generation, so it’s nice to be able to see what is going on, whether it is a selfie, what you are eating for dinner or a sexy photo.

9. Keep each other updated.

Keep each other updated on your life no matter how mundane it may seem. It can help each other feel like you are not missing out on each others lives. Also, so you know when the best time to contact them is, so you are not blowing up their phone in the middle of an important meeting.

10. Be honest.

Honesty is a crucial element to any happy and long lasting relationship, no matter how for you are away from each other. This can be especially hard when you are not physically there to see what is going on, so always be honest with your significant other.

11. Enjoy time with friends and family.

Sometimes when you get in a relationship your friends and family can be put in second place to them. So definitely take the extra time to hang out with friends and family.

12. Connect with their family!

This is important if you see a serious future with this person, and possible marriage. Their family will become your family, so it is just as important to have a good relationship with them as it is with your significant other.

13. Make mini-road trips.

If both of you live only a few hours from each other, then make a fun road trip out of it. You can find a place halfway between where you live and drive there for a mini-vacation.

14. Plan for the future!

Whether short-term or long-term, make plans to look forward to! Plan when you will see each other next, what you two will do to make up for lost time, where you are going to eat. Plan when the gap between you two will close and what you both hope to achieve together in the future. Having something to look forward to together only makes the time seem shorter!

One of the best parts about a long distance relationship is thinking about when you will see them next and knowing you can finally have them in your arms again. No matter how big or small the trip, both of you should make equal effort to see each other as often as you can.
