The Best Dorm Room Lighting Ideas

One of the best parts about going off to college is decorating your dorm room. You get to decorate your dorm in a way that best describes you. An important part of the decorating process is lighting. Here are 10 dorm room lighting ideas to match your vibe.

1. LED Strip Lights

LED strip lights are one of the most popular dorm room lighting ideas. You’ll see them all over Tik Tok. The most common way to use them is to line the ceiling, but they have many uses. You could line the bottom of your bed, the back of your television, or around your desk. If you really want to get creative, you could cover the surface of your ceiling, then glue pillow stuffing on top of it to make it look like clouds.

2. LED Vine Curtains

LED vine curtains are perfect for any dorm, and make great wall decor. You can hang them on your wall and clip pictures of your friends and family on them. If you have a lofted bed, you can hang them from the bottom of your bed as a curtain. This is a good choice if you don’t want any bright neon colors in your dorm room.

3. Mushroom Night Light

Mushroom night lights are a dorm room lighting idea that will give your room the vibe you’re looking for. They’re relaxing, colorful, and eye-catching. These night lights can give you a chill, mellow mushroom vibe, or a whimsical wonderland vibe depending on your dorm room theme. The mushroom night lights are super cute and way cooler than a regular night light.

4. LED Galaxy Projector

LED galaxy projectors are one of my favorite dorm room lighting ideas. I have a galaxy projector and I absolutely love it. The swirls of stars it makes on the ceiling is beautiful and so relaxing to fall asleep to. Most galaxy projectors have bluetooth, so you can listen to music while looking at the stars. I also have LED strip lights in my room, and that paired with my galaxy projector illuminates my room in the coolest way. It looks even better when you set the strip lights to change colors. It’s like going to a planetarium.

5. Sunset Projector Lamp

A sunset projector will help you take the most Instagram worthy photos. The sunset projector lamp has been all over Tik Tok as an Amazon favorite. It makes both a regular sunset and a rainbow a rainbow sunset. The galaxy projector that I have comes with a sunset projector attached to it, so I can tell you from personal experience that this dorm room lighting idea will make your dorm look amazing.

6. Fairy Lights

There are so many ways to use fairy lights to light up your dorm room. Some people like to string them along their ceiling to make it look like a starry night. If you have a lofted bed, you could string them along the bottom of your bed for a cute sitting area, or you could hang them from the edge of your lofted bed like a curtain. You can also hang them on your wall and clip on pictures of your friends and family. Another easy way to use fairy lights is to put them in jars. The fairy lights in the jars will look like fireflies, then you can sit the jars wherever you want, like your desk or your dresser.

7. Hexagon Wall Lamp

The hexagon wall lamp is touchscreen, which means that you can light up each hexagon by touching it. A cool idea would be to fill a wall with hexagon wall lamps. This would be great for a bedroom, gaming room, or office. You can organize these wall lamps however you want. You could make words, shapes, or you could use the lamps as a canvas and change the colors of each lamp to make a picture. The hexagon wall lamp allows you to show of your creative side. And since the hexagons change colors, you can create something different everyday with having to move the lamps.

8. Neon Sign

Light up your dorm room with a neon sign. You can hang a neon sign anywhere. It can go over your bed, on your door, on your desk, or on your wall. Neon signs are a great way to personalize your dorm room because it can say or be anything. If your interested in music you could have a music related sign. It could be your favorite song lyrics, the name or picture of your favorite artist, an instrument that you play, or it could simply be a neon sign that says ‘MUSIC’. If you want, you could also get a custom made sign. It could be something personal, like your name or your Greek letters.

9. Moon Lamp

Moon lamps make for the best night lights. This moon lamp can change colors and has a galaxy setting. It’ll look great on your desk and since you can adjust the colors. The moon lamp is very neutral, so it doesn’t seem like something only a child would use. This lamp fits well with any age group. Since it is so neutral, it will look good with almost any theme. The moon lamp is definitely one of my favorites.

10. Bonsai Tree Light

Bonsai tree lights are great way to light up your dorm room. They look the best with a minimalist style dorm. You could sit it on your desk and use it as a desk lamp. Since the light isn’t too bright, you can also use it as a night light. Because the Bonsai tree light isn’t too childish, you can continue to use it well after college. It would look great in an office, living room, or bedroom. Like the moon lamp,, the Bonsai tree light is very neutral and fits well in any age group.
