Social Media Dos And Don’ts For College Students

Today’s generation has a fixation with everyday constant use of social media. From posting pictures on Instagram to updating our Snapchat stories, we can rest assured (or maybe not rest at all) that much of our private lives have become public knowledge. College, especially, is a time where many want to document every aspect of their lives in order to create lasting memories. But, while many may not be concerned with their future right now, we all should be concerned about what we put on our social media accounts. In addition to being cautious, there are several social media dos and don’ts that college students should be following.

Do

Set up a LinkedIn account

Setting up a LinkedIn account will not only allow you to connect with your professors and peers, you will also have the opportunity to connect with those you may meet during internships, people in the industry, and who knows — a potential job could be waiting for you!

Don’t

Post anything negative — it may come back to haunt you!

Everyone has had those drunken college nights we see in all the movies, where unfortunate things (mostly embarrassing) end up on your snap story for the world to see.

Do

Be selective on who you friend/ accept on your social media accounts.

You never want to share some of your most intimate moments with “acquaintances” or random people you don’t even know (who knows – they could end up being your boss one day!!).

Don’t

Forget to proofread social media posts (especially on LinkedIn).

The worst first impression you could give a potential employer who is looking at your profile (the one place where you are supposed to put your best foot forward) is one of lack of effort. If your profile is riddled with typos and grammar mistakes, do you really think you have a good chance of being considered for a job?

Do

Set up privacy settings.

You don’t want all of your private information such as your email, phone number, etc. to be accessible to everyone on the Internet.

Don’t

Use social media as your own personal therapeutic session.

Be extremely careful about the tweets or Facebook posts you write, especially if you’re taking out your anger on fellow co-workers, classmates, professors, etc.

If there’s one thing you take out of all these social media dos and don’ts, let it be this golden rule of thumb: don’t post anything you wouldn’t want your grandma to see!
