15 Self Care Tips That Won’t Break The Bank

A lot of self-care is depicted as glamorous and expensive, that you have to splurge in order to feel content. But self-care can be as easy and simple as making sure you eat three times a day. It isn’t a luxury reserved only for those who can afford an entire day at a spa. Keep reading for a list of self care tips that are free, and will help you manage your general well-being.

1. Download a free meditation app

Developing a meditation practice is one of the best things you can do for your mindset. It reduces stress and improves concentration, among other benefits. Headspace and Calm are both great apps that will get you started on your meditation journey.

2. Write a gratitude list

Writing down what you’re thankful for, even on an extremely bad day, can give you a little bit of needed perspective. You’ll probably find that you have more to write about than you initially thought!

3. Get some sun

It’s 100 percent true that the weather affects your mood. Getting some vitamin D is a great way to improve your mood, and your overall health. Be sure to wear sunscreen!

4. Remember to drink water

This one sounds so simple, but it’s important and often forgotten. Your body functions at its best when it’s hydrated, so drink up! This week, try to drink one glass of water before going to bed every day. You’ll be amazed at the difference it makes.

5. Limit your screen time

Not all self care tips are about doing something; some are about not doing something! Instead of checking your phone when you wake up, try reading a book or making a cup of tea. Try to write or draw while riding the train to work instead of scrolling through Instagram. Maybe even turn your phone off for a certain amount of time every day. It feels very freeing, and is great for your mental health.

6. Wear something that makes you feel amazing

Confidence is one of the best feelings in the world. Remind yourself how beautiful you are by putting on your favorite outfit,  accessory or makeup.

7. Do a DIY face mask

Skin care is also self care! Outside of having a set skin care routine, pampering yourself a little extra is sometimes necessary. You don’t need to splurge on expensive face masks, just make one at home! Here is a list of easy DIY face masks made from ingredients you probably have at home.

8. Get some exercise

Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. And, it’s just good for you. Exercising regularly is one of the best things you can do for your body. Don’t love to exercise? That’s okay! Try a dance class or go swimming. Exercising doesn’t have to mean putting time in at the gym.

9. Start a journal

Journaling is a great way to articulate your emotions. Journaling every week or every day is a great habit to get into because writing down your thoughts and feelings helps you understand them more clearly. It also gives you a great insight to go back on later down the road.

10. Get enough sleep

Your body craves routine, so going to bed at a reasonable time every night is not only good for your body, but your mental health as well! Getting enough sleep also improves your memory, sharpens your attention and lowers your stress levels.

11. Make some decisions just for you

It can be hard to please everyone – so don’t! Try making a few decisions a week that only benefit you, or do one thing today just to make yourself happy.

12. Declutter your space

Your mind feels less cluttered when your home is. Self care tips don’t have to be about caring for you. It can be about caring about your space. Try going through your clothes and donating the things you don’t wear, or giving away books you’ve finished. Not only will this clear some space, but you’ll bring someone else a little happiness.

13. Go on a tiny adventure

While routine is great, doing the exact same everyday could drive anyone insane. Instead of booking a plane ticket and going on a massive trip, take a small adventure. Take a different route to work or stay on your train for a few extra stops to explore a new area. Is there a part of your city you haven’t seen yet?

14. Compliment yourself

Be your own best friend! Did you do something really nice today? Did you work extra hard on a project in school? Check in with yourself and be proud of the things you’ve done, no matter how small.

15. Take stretch breaks

Sitting in class all day can take a toll on your body. If you need a break, try doing a few stretches in the bathroom or secluded area.
