Scariest Horror Movies To Watch This Halloween

My favorite time of the year is Halloween, and there is nothing more fun than bundling up and watching some scary movies. It’s one of the best ways to get yourself in that spooky spirit, ready for the haunted houses and trick or treating.

Below is a list of some of my favorite horror movies that never fail to get me in that Halloween mood.

1. As Above So Below

The movie I enjoy the most is found footage movies. You can choose from many, like Blaire Witch, Paranormal Activity, and As Above, So Below.

This movie follows an archeologist, Scarlett Marlowe, and her search for the Philosopher’s Stone. She goes underground into the catacombs, where it is rumored the stone resides. As she and her team go deeper, they enter their nightmares and face horrors.

This movie reminds me of a Tomb Raider game and a mix of Indiana Jones… gone wrong. It is one of my favorite movies, and when they took it off Netflix, it felt like my entire world was ending. Now, you can find it on Hulu or rent it through Prime.

It was a movie that genuinely scared me, no matter how many times I watched it.

2. Nightmare On Elm Street

This entire series is a classic for horror movies. There is also a remake from 2010, which I found to be decently scary, and a good mix of the original movies.

This movie follows a group of teenagers harassed by Freddy Kruger in their dreams.  The franchise includes nine movies, television series, novels, and comics. The remake from 2010 is the ninth installment in the franchise but did not receive a good rating on rotten tomatoes.

3. Friday the 13th

Like the previous series, this is another classic that you can choose from. There was a remake that was released in 2009, and this movie received a 25% on rotten tomatoes.

Friday the 13th takes place at camp crystal lake, where the camp counselors start to get stalked by Jason Vorhees, who was reported to have drowned due to negligence from the previous counselors.

The remake follows a brother as he looks for his sister at Crystal Lake’s abandoned camp, where he finds Jason Vorhees.

There is also a crossover movie between Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th, called Freddy vs. Jason. In this movie, we see Freddy trying to use Jason as a way to get new victims and gain his power back. This has a 42% on rotten tomatoes.

4. The Strangers

This movie is terrifying and based on a real event that happened. This is suspenseful and full of jumpscares, and I was on the edge of my seat the first time I watched it. My significant other had to tell me when I could look at the screen again because I was scared.

In this horror/slasher movie, a couple is harassed by a group of masked strangers in the home they are staying in. The movie is full of eerie moments that make it hard to take your eyes off the screen or even look at it, depending on how scared you get.

5. It (original and 2017 version)

It follows a group of kids as they fight a supernatural clown taking kids from their city every 27 years. When they were kids, they defeated the clown once but had to come back 27 years later when he, Pennywise, came back.

The original, released in 1990 as a two-part miniseries, is a little over a three-hour watch. The remake is separated into two parts, one from their childhood and the second movie from their adulthood, and it is almost five hours if you watch them back to back.

The It remake is honestly the best horror remake that I have seen in the past few years, and it never fails to scare me when I watch it.

6. The Conjuring Universe

The Conjuring universe has many movies to choose from, ranging from exorcisms to creepy dolls. These movies are inspired by the word of Ed and Lorraine Warren, American paranormal investigators.

The movies in this series include the Annabelle movies, The Conjuring movies, The Nun,  and The Curse of La Llorona. There are also a few short films that you can find on YouTube.

See Also

There are all great films, and my personal favorites include The Conjuring 2 and Annabelle: Creation. These are the ones that still scare me today and were the scariest when I first watched them.

7. Insidious

The Insidious film series has four movies in it. The first two follow the same family as they fight malevolent spirits in their homes and work on protecting each other as a family. The final two movies follow a gifted psychic named Elaine Rainer, who helped the family in the first two movies.

The first Insidious movie, no matter how many times I’ve watched it, always manages to give me a fright. My family says it was the first horror movie to truly scare me, which shocked them as my family was raised on scary movies and Halloween.

8. Lights Out

Lights Out follow Rebecca and her little brother, Martin, as they struggle to keep the lights on and figure out what is lurking in the dark.

This movie is full of jump scares that always manage to get me, and when it first came out, it was surely hard to sleep after watching the first time.

The movie is based on the director David Sandberg’s 2013 short film Lights Out, and the actress is also featured in the movie that came out in 2016. Here is a link to watch that short film on YouTube.

Now that it’s October get bundled up on the couch with your favorite snacks, and get in that scary season mood by putting on a horror movie. Be sure you have some Halloween candy on standby.

Which one of these movies are you going to watch first? Let us know in the comments below!
