Reasons Why We Should All Be Thrift Shopping

Thrift shopping, otherwise known as second-hand shopping to some, is a fantastic alternative to retail shopping for a lot of reasons. It tends to be very popular among specific groups whether it be hipsters or art-oriented students. And I can say that with a lot of confidence, because I have witnessed this first hand.

Still, thrift stores are not that popular in a lot of major cities. But, there are still some good gems hidden everywhere. You just have to know where to look.

So, if you ever come across a thrift shop, we have all the reasons why you should go in.

Here is a list of reasons why we should all be thrift shopping!

1. You Can Find So Many Designer Pieces

One of the best things about thrift shopping is that there are always high quality clothes hidden in at least every nook and cranny. Either most people don’t know the value of what they’ve decided to hand over to a thrift store, or they really don’t care.

Whether it’s an old Levi’s t-shirt or a surprisingly authentic Chanel bag, there is always something for everyone. If you ever find yourself searching for items that have been discontinued, too, then thrift stores are your best bet.

Not only do they stock a variety of designer second-hand items, but they are also unbelievably cheap.

Thrift shopping is always a bargain.

2. You Can Always Buy Something That’s Of Greater Value And Sell It For A Profit

This is basically how the plot of Girlboss goes.

Speaking of designer items, if you’re ever looking to start an online clothes business or update your Depop store, then thrift shopping is the way to do it.

You can always buy designer items in bulk, check for wear and tears and sell the items for a reasonable profit.

And it doesn’t even have to be limited to designer items! Depop users are not always interested in designer items, sometimes all they want is something very ‘thrifty’ or vintage, which is something thrift shopping can provide.

3. Vintage!

Most things vintage!

Everything vintage!

Taking a walk down memory lane is easier everyday due to thrift shopping. Not only that, but vintage items have always been in high demand and thrift stores are the easiest place to discover anything old school.

From record players to chokers from the 90s. If you have an obsession with vintage items, or are simply looking for a gift, waste your money on thrift shopping.

4. It’s Cheaper

You’ll actually be saving money while spending money. Malls, retail stores and designer stores are selling overpriced items that probably won’t even last you for too long. Why waste your entire pay check just to say that you own something from a specific brand?

Apart from the incredibly low prices that some thrift stores decide to slap on their price tags, you will know exactly where your money is going.

As opposed to large conglomerates, most thrift stores are charity-operated and your contribution will end up aiding a charity in need.

Therefore, you’ll actually be contributing while not breaking the bank.

5. Recycling And Reusing Clothes

With thrift shopping, of course, all the items in there have been pre-owned. The best thing about that is that every thing has a story to tell and there is no wasting of materials.

By donating clothes you have previously owned and thus choosing to replace those with second-hand items, you end up in a cycle where nothing is going to waste.

Thrift shopping is environmentally friendly as it won’t end up in a landfill.

It’s all about reducing waste and being conscious of our decisions, so why not start with something simple like thrift shopping?

6. It’s Not Only Limited To Clothes

Some people might think that thrift stores only stock clothes, but it’s actually quite the opposite.

Apart from clothes, you can find a variety of items in thrift stores such as books, DVDs (I know, so early 2000s), furniture, tableware, entertainment and more. There are some amazing finds in thrift shopping, if you know where to look.

What’s more is that the simple thought of it is like a treasure hunt!

7. Ever-changing Inventory

The items that thrift stores stock up on change daily!

That’s not false advertisement, either. There are a lot of people who choose to donate their clothes to charity or thrift stores, so if you come back the next day to the same thrift store, you will see that their inventory has been updated!

Whether it be because some people have donated items or they have managed to sort out their previous donations.

You won’t have to wait for a new line to drop like with designer clothes or other retail brands, because someone out there will always donate clothes.

8. The Clothes Aren’t Seasonal!

One of the most annoying things about retail shopping is that clothes are sold accordingly to the current season. If it’s summer, usually only summer clothes are available and if it’s winter, then only winter clothes.

With thrift stores, well, this is where it gets fun. You can find items of clothing that are not limited to the season. There will be a variety of clothes to fit each season, because most times people don’t know what they want.

You could even buy a long sleeved top and go all DIY on it when you’re at home.

You could be going on vacation to a cold country, but your usual retail store won’t be able to help you out. So, don’t dismiss the idea of thrift shopping immediately.

9. It’s Actually Fun

Above all else, thrift shopping is actually fun. Like already mentioned, it’s like a treasure hunt where you’re competing against yourself to see what hidden gem you will find today.

That’s the best thing about it: you never know what you will find and you won’t know you need it until you lay eyes on it.

It’s entertaining and self-fulfilling.
