5 Reasons Living In The City Is The Best

Living in the city is not the easiest thing to do, but speaking from personal experience, it is the most rewarding! Here are 5 reasons living in the city is the best.

1. Diversity

Living in a city means you are going to be experiencing great levels of diversity. The problem with smaller communities is that they are just that: small. This leaves little room for diversity of thought, race, and culture. Living in a city allows you to experience the diversity this country has to offer. Especially if you are coming from a small town, experiencing the high levels of diversity in cities like Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco can be a welcome change. This change allows you to gain an education of different cultures and be exposed to different ways of life. Another great benefit of living in a big city is the diversity of food. With the many different cultures converging into a tight urban area, the diversity of food options is unprecedented. Instead of having to travel to a different country to experience new kinds of food, a city can offer a large assortment of food from different cultures all within the city limits. Overall, the diversity a large city can offer is unprecedented, and for someone wanting to widen their wings and educate themselves about the many different people in the world, there is no better place than the city.

2. Better opportunities

It’s no secret that a city is going to offer better opportunities than a smaller town. Especially if you are in a city like New York or Los Angeles, these cities tend to be hubs for global companies. This means you have the opportunity of getting a world-class job right within your city. Getting a job has as much to do with who you know as it does your experience, and in a city, you are much more likely to run into important people that can connect you to opportunities. For example, getting an internship at your dream company is going to be much easier in New York than a small suburban town. That’s not say there isn’t opportunities in smaller towns, but there is much more opportunities which are easier to get in large cities. Overall, your opportunities to network and gain connections in a large city are abundant. If you have a dream, a big city is where you need to go to pursue it. Chances are if you find the right people and say the right things, you may be able to make your dream come true.

3.  Public transportation

Another great reason why living in the city is the best is the public transportation a city offers. Living in a city can be wildly expensive, but not having to own a car can make up for it, at least a little bit. Public transportation allows you to get around the city effectively while also being easy on the wallet. The best example of this is the New York City Subway system. With lines stretching all across the city (minus Staten Island) you can get around anywhere in a semi-timely manner. While the NYC subway system gets a lot of flak for being dirty, late, and now a risk of infecting riders with COVID-19, the redeeming qualities are there. Again, you don’t have to ride a car, which is a nightmare in New York, the system runs into the late-night hours, and you can (mostly) always rely on it. Most large cities have some form of public transportation in the form of busses and subways, and they are all reliable and cheap. Perhaps the biggest advantage of these forms of transportation is the fact that they are all extremely environmentally friendly. As cars spew out an enormous amount of pollution every day, riding public transportation cuts down on the need to ride a car, reducing the carbon footprint of everyday transportation emissions. Overall, public transportation is a great way to get around a city and forgo having to purchase and maintain a car. Not only is this convenient but also extremely beneficial to the environment.

4. Creativity and inspiration

If you live in a big city, there is no doubt that you are going to be exposed to some of the best art, museums, and theatre the world has to offer. If you are someone who likes to be creative and inspired, there is no better place than the city. Cities offer an unprecedented amount of exposure of the arts, and will allow your work to be displayed to a huge number of people. There is a reason “starving artists” flock to cities like New York and Los Angeles. Not only will you have the opportunity for plenty of people to see and hear your work, even if it’s on the street corner, you can often run into the right people who can launch your career. For those who may not be pursuing a career in the arts but love to indulge in them, a large city will be the place to live. There is an endless amount of museums, art exhibits, theatre performance, performance art, etc. throughout cities, and you will likely never be able to see it all. Overall, the city is the best place to explore your creativity and gain inspiration through the many art forms the city has to offer. If you have big dreams of becoming any kind of artist, or are just looking for some inspiration, the city is absolutely the best place for you to live.

5. Young adult life

Finally, there is nothing better than living out your young adult years in the city. Not only do you have a huge amount of people to choose from when looking for friends, you have the whole city to experience together. From shopping to nightlife, to food, to coffee shops, to parks, there is plenty of places to experience with your friends. For those who want to live it up before they settle down with a family, the city is the place to be. Even raising a family in the city is great, as you will never run out of things to do. Overall, the city is the best to experience while your young, so if you’re up for it, don’t waste time getting there!
