Organizing Tips That Will Help You Get Your Life Together

When life feels a little crazy, especially in times like these where we’re home for most of the day, organization is key. Below we have provided a list of simple and easy organization hacks that will make a huge difference.

1. Make a list

This is one of the most important organizing tips on the list. That’s why we made it #1. When organizing anything, it is always essential you write it down. We aren’t superheroes, we can’t remember everything. That’s why a pen and paper will always come in handy.

You can go as far as creating a bullet journal. Bullet journals allow your imagination and creativity to run wild. Track habits, water intake, feelings, budgeting, a cleaning schedule, and more. The possibilities are quite literally endless. You’ll feel so proud of yourself once it’s all said and done. Plus, checking things off of any list will feel incredibly satisfying.

This also gives you an excuse to buy those fancy pens you’re always fawning over but never wanting to buy, because who doesn’t just type on their computer anymore? Writing gets you out of the technology bubble and allows you to sit down, focus, and practice some mindfulness.

2. Organize by size, color, or object.

Sometimes it can be daunting looking at a big pile of stuff and trying to figure out the best way to store it. This is why you need to follow the SOC rule. Size, Color Object. For example, if you’re organizing clothes in your closet, put your shirts in one section, pants in another. Fold you sweatshirts and sweaters and designate a place for everything.

To go a step further, you can organize your apparel by color. Take your shirts and line them up. Put whites in one section, black in the other. If you’re big on colors, make that closet of yours look like a rainbow. It will be easier to find what you’re looking for and will be aesthetically pleasing. It’s a win-win.

3. Invest in organizers

You can only excuse the fact that you don’t have silverware organizers for so long. When you’re moving up into the world and advancing into adulthood, take the step and spend the extra money on this. Rather than having to search around in your drawers for what you want, everything you need will be displayed cleanly and right at your fingertips. Every extra second count, you don’t need to spend it looking for a spoon.

Take it a step further and put some organizers in your fridge. Not only will this preserve the life of your food (because you’re actually storing them properly), but you won’t end up with a fridge full of clutter. Rather than letting your food spoil and go to waste (because you forgot you had it), put it on display! A little organization can make a huge difference. This is one of the most essential organizing tips that you can’t miss!

4. Do regular cleanse and clean-outs

Instead of waiting until the end of the year to clean out your closet, or waiting a few weeks too long to clean out your cabinets and fridge, consciously make an effort to cleanse your space more often. Donate to Goodwill, sell it on Poshmark. There are so many ways you can do good, make money, and feel accomplished.

Additionally, make sure you wipe down your surfaces, clean your bathroom, kitchen, and dust your space at least once a week. You don’t want to look at your shower floor when it’s too late. As an adult (yes, college-age is considered an adult, you are living on your own), you need to make sure you disinfect and actually clean (not just “organize”) your surroundings. Moving around dusty objects is only doing the job half-way.

Putting in the extra work will pay off. Once you get your life organized, you will feel ready and willing to conquer anything.

5. Make your bed

You’ve heard this before and you’re hearing it again. Making your bed is the first thing you should be doing in the morning. There is rarely a better feeling than when you’re staying at a hotel and day after day you get to jump into a freshly made bed. You deserve to get that kind of treatment every day. Now, you may not have someone doing it for you, but you can pamper yourself.

Not only are you starting to put in the work as soon as you wake up, but it’s also something you’ve already accomplished for the day. When you’re room is looking cleaned and organized, you will feel more at ease. Don’t believe us? Try it for yourself. You can be surprised at how calming it can be to have a freshly made bed (especially when you get to sink into it at the end of the day).

6. Put it back

We’re all culprits of taking something out and forgetting to put it back. What you don’t realize is that it actually takes more time putting it all away later than just putting it away now.  It’s just as easy to put it away as it was to take it out. Plus, this sets a good example for those around you, whether it be roommates, siblings, or your children.

7. Remember to check in with yourself

How are you going to know what your space needs if you’re not aware of what you need? Make sure you take time out of your day to check in with yourself. Ask yourself how you’re feeling. Look back at your day and figure out what your steps are for the next day. This goes back to making a list. You don’t have to just make a checklist for tasks and errands. You can make lists for emotional goals and small victories.

Make sure you always check off that you’re doing things that make you happy. If you aren’t feeling your best, your area won’t look it’s best. It can be very easy to slip into a lazy lifestyle and you are what you put out into the world.  When you have little things to work for, even if it’s just making sure your space is clean and tidy, you feel more accomplished.
