10 New Hobbies To Try Out This Year

With the new year comes new hobbies! New hobbies are a fun way to get out of your comfort zone and figure out where your passions lie. Trying something you’ve never done before may be daunting, but it’ll be worth it once you find something new that you enjoy. Not sure what new hobby you wanna try? We’ve got you – check out our list of 10 new hobbies to try out this year!

1. Cooking

It’s time to put your ramen and Kraft to the side and start cooking some new, delicious food! Try to expand upon your cooking skills this year. If you aren’t super into cooking, try baking instead. It’s never too late to learn how to cook, and in doing so, you’ll find every meal of the day much more rewarding. A great website to check out for recipe ideas is Tasty. Tasty has a wide variety of recipes, each including a helpful video guide on how to create the recipe. If you’re more of a visual person, this is the perfect way to start learning. Take it step-by-step and try cooking something you’ve never tasted before!

2. Bullet Journaling

Bullet journaling may seem daunting at first, but once you got a solid spread down, you’ll find yourself using it every single day. You can find plenty of bullet journal ideas on Pinterest if you aren’t sure where to start. You can also check out my bullet journal article to get some page ideas! Many bullet journals include habit trackers, goals, schedules, and planners. The great thing about bullet journaling is that you can really make it your own! You don’t have to follow a predisposed plan – just open your journal and start writing.

3. Depop

Have some clothes sitting in your closet that you don’t really wear anymore? Try making some extra cash by selling them on Depop! Depop is an app you can use to buy and sell secondhand clothing. Depop often includes original pieces that have been thrifted, pieces that others don’t have use for anymore, or even clothing and jewelry that someone has created themselves! If you’ve got a knack for fashion, consider listing some of your own pieces and selling them to others. There’s a helpful guide you can follow if you aren’t sure where to start, and many Depop users create their own guides on YouTube as well. Figure out your own personal aesthetic, create some business cards, snap some pics, and come up with a fun name for your shop. You’ll be thriving with your own business in no time.

4. Cross-Stitching

Cross-stitching is a fun way to add new designs to your home, or even sell designs to others. Cross-stitching is similar to painting or coloring by number – you follow a chart of the design you want to create and stitch your thread through the corresponding squares. Check out this helpful beginner’s guide if you need some extra guidance. You can create many different designs, from funny phrases to gorgeous pictures! You can also find many layouts online to follow if you don’t want to come up with your own design. However, if you’ve got a creative bone in your body, try coming up with your own ideas and selling them online through shops like Etsy, Depop, or even Facebook Marketplace!

5. Photography

Next on our list of new hobbies to try out this year is photography! Find your photographic niche and start snapping some cool photos. Do some research on the type of pictures you’re interested in taking, figure out which camera is best, and create a fun portfolio. Check out this beginner’s guide if you’re unsure of where to start. You can even stick to iPhone pictures if a camera feels too daunting. Another fun niche in the photography community is astrophotography! If you’re interested in stars and outer space, you can follow a star map from your phone, find something in the sky you want to shoot, and edit it in photoshop. Make a business out of it by doing photoshoots or selling your pictures online.

6. Jewelry Making

Creating your own jewelry is simple and fun. You can create beaded jewelry, wire jewelry, or even take goldsmith classes to make cool quality pieces. Figure out which type of jewelry you’re interested in, gather the necessary materials, and start creating! You can find inspiration with a quick Google search, or you can also look on Pinterest. This online guide to jewelry making is a great place to start, as it includes instructions for the different types of jewelry making you may want to explore. Whether you want to do this for fun or make some extra cash by selling your own pieces, you’ll find the experience very rewarding.

7. Astrology

Astrology, crystals, and tarot reading are great new hobbies to explore. If you’re interested in the history of astrology or figuring out how to read birth charts, you’ll learn many valuable qualities about the people around you as well as yourself. There are tons of books you can pick up as well as online guides if you’d like to conduct this type of research. Along with this aspect of the spiritual world, you can learn about crystals and the many different ways you can use them. Crystals have a variety of different uses, from healing to warding off negative energy. You can learn where to place them around your home and how to start collecting them. Learning how to read tarot cards is a great way to exercise spirituality as well. Dive into the spirit world headfirst and find your own peace of mind.

8. Film

If you’re more interested in telling a unique story than just snapping pics, consider getting into film! You can exercise the art of film in a variety of different ways. You can use a high-quality camera to tell a story, or you can even create your own YouTube channel. Figure out what you want to record, grab the necessary materials, and make your own film art. You can find helpful guides to film online if you’d like to shoot your own short films or movies. If you’re more into the YouTube side of the film world, figure out your YouTube niche and get some inspiration from your favorite online creators. In the modern age, TikTok is another great way to administer your filmmaking skills and put them out to the world. Regardless of how you choose to do it, this is a fun creative outlet that will work for anyone.

9. Mixology

If you enjoy drinking and you’re wondering how to create your own mixed drinks at home, try learning about mixology! There are many online courses you can take online to become a real pro, or you can search for basic tutorials if you’d rather keep it casual. Mixology can open you up to the world or bartending, or you can simply craft your own drinks at home for the enjoyment of friends and family. The fun part about mixology is your ability to get creative with it. Learning the ins and outs of which flavors go together will allow you to make your own unique drinks rather than simply copying popular bar staples.

10. Nail Art

Creating your own nail art is as easy as grabbing a bobby pen and some gel polish. This is a simple way to save money and explore your creativity. Start simple by crafting easy designs to figure out if you’re actually interested in doing your own nail art. If you find yourself intrigued, you can grab the more intricate tools and try your hand at complicated designs. The great thing about nail art is that you can perform it on yourself to practice before doing it on others! There are a slew of video tutorials you can find online for specific designs, or step-by-step guides for beginners. You can find different designs on Pinterest, or even create your own designs!
