The Ultimate Checklist For Tec De Monterrey Freshmen

First year at Tec? Everything might be confusing for you right now, because it’s a new stage of your life: college. This frightening, thrilling, challenging experience somehow came up so quickly. So here you are, about to begin this exciting adventure. To guide you in this journey, I’ve created the ultimate checklist for Tec de Monterrey freshmen.

1. Be responsible.

You might read that and think, “damn, that’s a piece of cake. I can totally do that.” But it takes a lot of commitment and dedication. Soon, you’ll only have to answer to yourself; and being responsible benefits the most important person.. you.

2. Stay organized.

Like, literally, in everything. We all know that time is money, but we also know that it really is valued. You don’t have to sacrifice your entire social life or your free time. You just need to know how to organize your time correctly, in order to have time for “school things” as well as quality time for your friends (and yourself).

3. Try to maintain perfect attendance in your classes.

C’mon! You had your entire high school career to do whatever you wanted. Right now, the roles are reversed; in high school, not going to class made you the cool kid in the class, but right now, the coolest people are the ones that go to every class (ALWAYS).

4. Sit up front.

Yes! You need to stand out! By sitting in front, you have the opportunity to be more in touch with the subject that’s being discussed, and can get more involved with it and understand it better. Bonus: you might have a better relationship with your teacher since you’re showing interest and an extra effort.

5. Network.

This is another reason you should prioritize your time and not give up your social life. In college you have the opportunity of being close to important people or future important people. You never know if the shy girl with glasses that sits next to you in class will be the next Steve Jobs. Always be nice to everyone; you never know if you’ll end up working for them one day!

6. Take advantage of Tec’s resources.

In high school, you only wanted to skip classes and get out of your school. But right now, it’s different. Taking advantage of what your school has to offer can be really beneficial. Get involved in activities, whether they relate to you specifically or not. It’s never too late to try different things! Bonus: You get to know even more people by taking full advantage of these opportunities.

7. Work on your résumé.

Why wait? You’re not getting any younger. Getting involved in school activities, such as a sports team, a reading group, music activities, community service, academic enrichment activities, and leadership can help improve your résumé. But perhaps the most important aspect is work experience. It’s smart to get experience in your potential work field before pursuing a career in it. Don’t wait. Take advantage of all the time you have right now.

8. Talk to your teachers.

Sometimes we don’t know the person standing right in front of us; in this case, your teachers. Some teachers might be wallflowers and go unnoticed, but many colleges have the prestige they have earned by having really good teachers as part of their team. These teachers might be owners of big companies/brands, they might know a certain someone that can help you get the job of your dreams, or they might have something really important to say. So approach them, talk to them when you have the time, and get to know them. You could learn a lot from them, even outside the class.

9. Take interesting optional courses.

Take advantage of the “optional” courses you can take. There are other subjects that are mandatory, and those are the ones that everybody needs to take. Choose wisely. Get rid of all the subjects that are not of your interest, and focus on the ones that fit better in what you want.

10. Enjoy.

In this stage of your life, the word “future” might be the only one you hear, and the only language you speak. And yes, it’s kind of a big deal. But really try to enjoy the process. At the end of it, what’s most important is how you got there.
