I’ll Be There For You

“So no one told you life was gonna be this way… Your job’s a joke, you’re broke, your love life’s DOA.
It’s like you’re always stuck in second gear when it hasn’t been your day, your week, your month or even your year. But! I’ll be there for you, when the rain starts to pour. I’ll be there for you, like I’ve been there before. I’ll be there for you, ’cause you’re there for me too.”

Friends is a cultural phenomenon that almost 30 years later still feels relevant and even has new adults binge-watching it and connecting greatly with the content. Featuring the beloved characters of Monica, Chandler, Phoebe, Joey, Rachel, and Ross, the decade long series follows the twists and turns of their personal and professional lives in New York City.

Even now, when I have watched through it at least five times, there are still episodes I don’t remember, jokes that make me laugh, and heartwarming moments that make me cry. Having a favorite Friends character has been just as important to fans as knowing your Hogwarts House or Jedi/Sith alignment. For example, I am totally a Monica, though with a fashion sense like Rachel, wishing I could be more like Phoebe. So! If you have a favorite character or character you are most like here are 3 must-have items!

Monica Geller

Portrayed by actress Courteney Cox, Monica appears in all of the show’s 236 episodes, from its premiere in 1994 to its finale in 2004. A chef known for her cleanliness, competitiveness, and obsessive-compulsive nature, Monica is the younger sister of Ross Geller and best friend of Rachel Green, the latter of whom she invites to live with her after Rachel forsakes her own wedding. The two characters spend several years living together as roommates until Monica begins a romantic relationship with long-time neighbor and friend Chandler Bing, whom she marries. Unable to conceive children on their own, Chandler and Monica eventually adopt twins Erica and Jack and move out of their apartment into a larger house in the suburbs.

2. The College Cube – Dorm Desk Bookshelf

This is not Monica’s closet! Instead, have this perfectly organized addition to her list.

https://www.dormco.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=TCCDB-CUBEBOOK-BEECH

This is actually a wonderful Monica find, (something I might actually look into). You need the space to study, after all, and moving these stacked college supplies from the top of your desk to the floor every time you want to study won’t be very efficient. Instead, this college bookcase is perfect to put on any dorm desk and has plenty of places to organize all your school supplies. Super easy to build, it also comes in other colors, (though you could always paint it and customize it even further to your liking.)

3. All In Motion Work-Out Clothes

One of the most amazing things about Monica is the dedication she has to keeping herself healthy. So, of course, this had to be on her list!

Whether you aspire to lose some weight and/or gain some muscle or just to maintain your healthy lifestyle, fend off that Freshman 15 doing on-campus exercises with these comfortable and affordable workout clothes. All In Motion is a Target house brand that is a one-stop-shop for your athletic needs. Starting as low as just $12, they have sports bras, shorts, leggings, sweatpants, tops, and jackets in a wide range of styles, colors, and sizes!

Chandler Bing

Portrayed by actor Matthew Perry, Chandler was born to Nora Tyler Bing, an erotic romance novelist, and Charles Bing, a gay female impersonator, and star of a Las Vegas drag show called “Viva Las Gay-gas” as Helena Handbasket. Chandler’s parents announced their divorce to him over Thanksgiving dinner when he was nine years old, an event that causes him to refuse to celebrate the holiday in his adulthood and develop his sense of humor as a defense mechanism. Chandler has a very good sense of humor and is notoriously sarcastic. In college, he lived with his good friend Ross Geller. He met Ross’s sister, Monica Geller, and her friend, Rachel Green, while celebrating Thanksgiving at the Geller’s house.  He continues this connection by living across the hall from Monica and Phoebe, and then Rachel, where he meets his best friend Joey Tribbani. Though Chandler suffers from commitment issues through most of the series, he later marries Monica at the end of season 7. In season 10, he and Monica go on to adopt twins.

2. Tabletop Foosball

One of the most iconic items of his friendship with Joey, how could Chandler’s list not have a foosball table?

A completely affordable version, this foosball setup sits on top of any flat service. Though there is some assembly required, it measures out to 20.1 inches in length, 12.2 inches in width, and 4.1 inches in height – perfect for any dorm room!

3. Duck And Chicken Socks

Awww the duck and chick! Such a weird but endearing storyline for Chandler, so I totally had to add it to the list!

Something I totally think Chandler would rock, you could match one duck sock with one chick sock (just like Chandler might have done with Rocky and Bulwinkle). Cute, funky, funny, and easy to hide under slacks, this is a not so subtle way to be just like your favorite Friends character.

Pheobe Buffay

Portrayed by Lisa Kudrow, Phoebe appeared in all of the show’s 236 episodes. Phoebe was born on February 16 and is the daughter of Frank and Lily Buffay. Her birth mother’s name was Phoebe Abbott, whom she was named after. Phoebe has a twin sister, Ursula, who is also portrayed by Kudrow. She is a masseuse and musician, notable for her offbeat and extremely ditzy behavior. She was Monica Geller’s roommate before Rachel Green, which is how she was introduced to the group. Phoebe is best friends with Monica and Rachel, along with their neighbors, Chandler Bing and Joey Tribbiani, and also Monica’s brother Ross Geller. She plays a Gibson Gospel and sings at Central Perk. During the show’s ninth season, Phoebe and Joey decide to choose a blind date for each other. Phoebe finds someone for him, but Joey forgets about their deal and doesn’t find anyone for her. So a couple of minutes before the date, Joey accidentally finds Mike who agrees to go on a blind date with Phoebe. Mike Hannigan and Phoebe begin a romantic relationship. They later get engaged and then marry.

2. Massage Oil

Though she is first and foremost a songwriter, singer, and guitarist, her day job is as a masseuse, so we can’t forget these on Phoebe’s list.

Joey Tribbiani

Portrayed by Matt LeBlanc, Joey is an Italian-American actor who lives in New York City with his roommate and best friend, Chandler Bing, and hangs out in a tight-knit group of his other best friends: Ross Geller, Monica Geller, Rachel Green, and Phoebe Buffay. He is from Queens, New York, and is Catholic. Joey comes from a working-class Italian-American family of eight children, of which he is the only boy. Joey is portrayed as promiscuous and dim-witted but good-natured, as well as very loyal, caring, and protective of his friends. He is a food-loving womanizer who has had more luck with dates than any of the other group members. In contrast to his persona as the “ladies’ man”, he has also a marked childish side. He enjoys playing video games and foosball, loves sandwiches and pizza, and is a big fan of Baywatch. As a struggling actor, he is constantly looking for work – until he lands a stable roll on Days Of Our Lives (which he is fired from and then brought back). He was ordained as a minister in “The One with the Truth About London” and officiated at both Monica and Chandler’s and Phoebe and Mike’s weddings.

2. Comedy And Tragedy Keychain

What is Joey Tribbiani if not an actor?

https://www.amazon.com/Journey-Comedy-Tragedy-Theatre-Keychain/dp/B07CB317QW/

With it being such a big part of his life, I think that every audience member can agree that we felt such joy when he landed his role on Days Of Our Lives. Though he may not be the world’s greatest actor, (though sometimes not a fault of his own, getting casted in some… interesting plays), it is clear that he gives it his all – his whole heart and complete dedication. Here is a simple but theatrical way to show your love for the arts.

3. Baywatch T-Shirt

One of the most iconic items of his friendship with Chandler, how could Joey’s list not something Baywatch related?

https://www.amazon.com/Designs-Baywatch-T-Shirt-Yellow-Large/dp/B01CK87ZJI/

This novelty men’s shirt has the opening logo of the show across a yellow background. Officially licensed, it is available in sizes small through 2XL. Something I totally could see Joey wearing on his day off, relaxing in his lounge chair, with an open cooler full of beer and a pizza on the way.

Rachel Green

Portrayed by Jennifer Aniston, the character Rachel appeared in all of the show’s 236 episodes during its decade-long run, from its premiere on September 22, 1994 to its finale on May 6, 2004. Introduced in the show’s pilot as a naïve runaway bride who reunites with her childhood best friend Monica Geller and relocates to New York City, Rachel gradually evolves from a spoiled, inexperienced “daddy’s girl” into a successful, fashionista businesswoman with dreams of moving to Paris. During the show’s second season, the character becomes romantically involved with Monica’s brother, Ross, with whom she maintains a complicated on-off relationship throughout the series. Together, Ross and Rachel have a daughter, Emma.

1. Vogue Subscription

Something I have actually been meaning to do, Rachel’s list couldn’t start or be completed without a subscription to Vogue magazine.

https://subscribe.vogue.com/subscribe/vogue/

From her very first episode where she argues with her father, “It’s like all of my life, everyone has always told me you’re a shoe! You’re a shoe, you’re a shoe, you’re a shoe. And today I just stopped and said what if I don’t want to be a shoe? What if I want to be a purse, you know? Or… or a hat!” it is clear that part of Rachel’s language is clothing and fashion. And then, she goes through her amazing careers with Bloomingdales and Ralph Lauren and she even had a job in Paris at Louis Vuitton waiting for her at the end of the series. I remember her dedication to her work and the pure interest and excitement she had in the world of fashion and love the episode where she goes to a lecture about up-in-coming things in the industry.

2. Glittering Eiffel Tower

The fashion capital of the world and where her Louis Vuitton job is located, how could we not have an Eiffel Tower figurine on Rachel’s list?

https://www.etsy.com/listing/489874284/glitter-eiffel-tower-parisians-theme?ref=shop_home_active_1&frs=1&crt=1

Not only is this a perfect addition because of her fiercely fashionista personality, but because Rachel is a total romantic. Realizing she didn’t want to marry Barry lead her down a path of not discovering herself but discovering what her heart truly wants, which is a passionate, loving, strong, and stable relationship with a best friend.

3. I’ve Got Great Boots Boots

“They’re my new ‘I don’t need a job, I don’t need my parents, I’ve got great boots’ boots!”

Available on Coach Outlet for 75% off, the Ombre Heel boot comes in black and oxblood, and can be paid with four small, interest-free payments (over two months) via Klarna! These boots have a suede upper, leather lining and footbed and outsole, inside zip closure, with a 3 1/4th inch heel. Crafted in smooth suede with a blocked ombré heel, this streamlined silhouette hits just under the knee, adding effortless swag to any look.

Ross Geller

Portrayed by David Schwimmer, Ross is considered by many to be the most intelligent member of the group – as a paleontologist with a doctorate – and is noted for his overly annoying but sometimes goofy demeanor. His relationship with Rachel Green was included in TV Guide’s list of the best TV couples of all time, as well as Entertainment Weekly’s “30 Best ‘Will They/Won’t They?’ TV Couples”. Monica’s older brother, Ross’s best friend is his old college roommate, Chandler Bing, he is also known for having a life-long obsession with Rachel, totally being in love with her since high school. In the first episode of the series, we are introduced to the character by him explaining that his wife is a lesbian and they are getting a divorce – his first of three divorces on the show. Quickly after, he finds out that she is pregnant and they have a son, Ben, together. Notably, while getting married to Emily in London, he says Rachel’s name at the altar, which leads to his second divorce. Then, while drunk in Las Vegas, he gets married to Rachel, which turns into his third divorce. And he fathers another child, Emma, with Rachel later on.

1. The Rise And Fall Of The Dinosaurs

I’m not even going to lie… three things for every other character came to me clear as day but when it comes to Ross – who is my least favorite character and who I think is the real villain of the show – all I can think about is dinosaurs. So, here’s a dinosaur book to start Ross’s list.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0727TN8H6/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0

A sweeping and groundbreaking history of the age of dinosaurs, from one of our finest young scientists.

The dinosaurs. 66 million years ago, the Earth’s most fearsome and spectacular creatures vanished. Today their extraordinary true story remains one of our planet’s great mysteries.

In this stunning narrative spanning more than 200 million years, Steve Brusatte, a young American paleontologist who has emerged as one of the foremost stars of the field—discovering ten new species and leading groundbreaking scientific studies and fieldwork—masterfully tells the complete, surprising, and new history of the dinosaurs, drawing on cutting-edge science to dramatically bring to life their lost world and illuminate their enigmatic origins, spectacular flourishing, astonishing diversity, cataclysmic extinction, and startling living legacy. Captivating and revelatory, The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs is a book for the ages.

Brusatte traces the evolution of dinosaurs from their inauspicious start as small shadow dwellers—themselves the beneficiaries of a mass extinction caused by volcanic eruptions at the beginning of the Triassic period—into the dominant array of species every wide-eyed child memorizes today, T. rex, Triceratops, Brontosaurus, and more. This gifted scientist and writer re-creates the dinosaurs’ peak during the Jurassic and Cretaceous, when thousands of species thrived, and winged and feathered dinosaurs, the prehistoric ancestors of modern birds, emerged. The story continues to the end of the Cretaceous period, when a giant asteroid or comet struck the planet and nearly every dinosaur species (but not all) died out, in the most extraordinary extinction event in earth’s history, one full of lessons for today as we confront a “sixth extinction.”

Brusatte also recalls compelling stories from his globe-trotting expeditions during one of the most exciting eras in dinosaur research—which he calls “a new golden age of discovery”—and offers thrilling accounts of some of the remarkable findings he and his colleagues have made, including primitive human-sized tyrannosaurs; monstrous carnivores even larger than T. rex; and paradigm-shifting feathered raptors from China.

An electrifying scientific history that unearths the dinosaurs’ epic saga, The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs will be a definitive and treasured account for decades to come.

What Friends list wouldn’t be complete without an oversized Central Perk coffee mug? So, why not one from iconic (and hated by Phoebe) Pottery Barn!
