College Life

10 Major Changes You Go Through After You Get To College

High school was awesome, don’t get me wrong. But now we’re entering the real world, and A LOT of things change.

1. You become more grateful for things from your past/home.

With big changes comes big responsibility, and I know I definitely became grateful for homecooked meals and having my parents be able to drive me everywhere.

2. You become more financially savvy.

Going out was easy in high school, you’d tell your parents where you’d be and they’d give you some cash. In college, we become more responsible for what we spend and it comes down to decisions like choosing between an expensive brunch with friends or doing groceries for the week.

3. You miss home.

Not gonna lie, college can be a home away from home, but you miss getting to be yourself in a familiar house, in your own room.

4. You learn a lot about different people and their backgrounds and cultures

Unlike high school where you knew people because of your proximity to them, college is a place where people flock to from many different places. With this diversity comes a range of perspectives that will open your eyes to a whole new world (pun intended).

5. You learn the importance of hard work.

Whether it be working on campus, off campus, or even working for a good grade in your class, college brings you to change up your habits and ensure you are as efficient as possible.

6. You choose your friends.

Gone are the days wherein you *had* to be friends with this one girl because you see her every single day. College allows you to see groups of people you vibe with and choose who you want to hang out. You are no longer obligated to invite that one girl from your bio class to hang out just because you had friends that were close to her.

7. You realize what you want to do in life.

Varsity sports, scholastic decathlon, student council and part of the school publication? While that is very much possible to do in college, you finally get to decide what you want to focus on.

8. You meet the most amazing mentors.

College opens up a variety of doors for you, giving you opportunities to network with some of the most amazing people that can definitely help you in the future.

9. The job hunt and career process begin.

As you are no longer in high school and basically prepping yourself up for working after college, the job hunt begins. You will begin to start looking at organizations and talking to people to find possible jobs and careers in the field you are studying and see if it’s a right fit for you.

10. Your world becomes SO MUCH BIGGER!

Small town high school is over, and everything now becomes within your reach! Whether it be finding cool internships, jobs, or studying abroad, you will soon realize that you can do anything you set your mind to, and with the environment around you, you will be supported in every way possible!
