As young adults, we’ve all hooked up with people we maybe shouldn’t have. Our awkward encounters may range from best friend’s crush to boyfriend’s relative… or in my case, Dad’s neighbor. A bizarre coincidence set the tone for what became one of my most memorable hook up tales to date. What began as a promising Tinder match ended as something that hit a little too close to home.
It’s A Match!
Freshly 18 and exploring all that the world had to offer, I found myself where many young adults do in their quest to find love… Tinder. One day, as I was absentmindedly swiping through the many men of Los Angeles, I came across an old high school acquaintance. A couple years older than me, I had admired him from afar, not confident enough to ever approach an upperclassman. But that was then, and this was now, and high school was decidedly over and done with. I swiped right, and to my delight, matched with him. I now held the ideal opportunity to fulfill my high school fantasy in my hands.
Netflix And Chill?
He ended up messaging me shortly after, and we immediately hit it off. We bonded over our mutual hatred for our aforementioned high school, expressing our gratitude that we had moved on from that stage of our lives. It was a cold, rainy Winter day, and he asked me if I wanted to come over, watch movies, and cuddle. I’d hooked up with enough people at that point to recognize the age-old “Netflix and chill” maneuver. But he was cute, wasn’t a stranger, and I was interested; so I got his address and headed over, not expecting anything out of the ordinary.
I Ended Up At… My Dad’s
I put his address into Google Maps and found that he lived in my hometown, a few blocks away from our shared high school. As I drove the route that I had hundreds of times before, things started becoming eerily familiar. I parked about a block away from his house, still clueless as to what I would soon find. When I eventually arrived, I ended up at not only at his… but at my dad’s apartment complex. Having moved to a nearby town with my mom a year previously, I rarely found myself in my dad’s building. Especially under these circumstances. However, determined not to turn back, and curious to see where things would go, I forged ahead.
We All Make Mistakes
“I think you know my dad,” were definitely not the first words I ever envisioned saying on a first date. We ended up laughing about the bizarre coincidence and sharing stories about our mutual acquaintance with my father. He was easy to talk to and didn’t make the situation weird, which he easily could have. We watched movies and hooked up, as planned, and I went on my merry way. Our relationship fizzled out soon after and we didn’t talk again, other than matching a few more times on Tinder over the years. Luckily, I never ran into him when visiting my dad, and still haven’t mentioned the rendezvous I had with his neighbor to this day.
