How To Make A Natural Face Moisturizer That Will Make You Glow

A natural face moisturizer can save your skin! If you’re like me, you’ve used tons of different kinds of storebought facial moisturizers and none of them have ever worked out. I’ve always found something wrong with every moisturizer I tried. Some were too greasy, some felt drying, some smelled gross, and others caused acne. If this story feels similar to what you’ve gone through, try out this natural face moisturizer!

The Ingredients

For years, I’ve been struggling against my skin, trying so hard to get smooth, clear, nourished skin. All I managed to do was make my acne worse, and even when I wasn’t making it worse, I certainly wasn’t improving it. After a while, I noticed that there were some ingredients in my face creams that I wasn’t too comfortable with. I realized that I didn’t know what more than half of the ingredients were and when I could recognize them, there was no way to know if they were harvested sustainably.

In one moisturizer, I even found that they used alcohol, which is known to dry out the skin and cause acne. After all of this, I finally decided to make my own recipe. This recipe uses only natural ingredients, so you know exactly what’s going on your face. Plus, the ingredients are non-comedogenic so your pores won’t get clogged!

Shea Butter

For this recipe, we’ll use two ingredients: shea butter and carrier oil. The reason for this is that shea butter is super nourishing for your skin and also incredibly moisturizing. You can choose from a variety of oils (discussed below) and the one that you choose might have a slightly different effect, but any oil will help with locking in and providing moisture. In most recipes with shea butter, you can swap it out for cocoa butter or mango butter, but in this recipe, it’s important that you stick to shea! Cocoa butter is comedogenic, which means that it will clog your pores and cause blackheads.

However, coconut oil is also comedogenic, and some people swear by it for their skincare routine, so there’s really no right answer here. If you have oily or sensitive skin and are prone to acne, I would recommend not using cocoa butter. If it’s all you have on hand and find that you never get acne no matter what you do to your skin, then maybe give it a shot. Also, while you can use mango butter on your face, shea butter is the best default option. It’s an anti-inflammatory and can heal, condition, and tone your skin. Mango butter is also nourishing, however, and it’s a great option for those with mature/aging skin.

Natural Oil

For our natural oil, there are a couple options to choose from. I don’t recommend coconut oil as it is comedogenic and it doesn’t really get absorbed well into the skin, but again, if it’s all you have on hand and you never get acne (ever), then feel free to try it out. Other than coconut oil, there’s jojoba oil, almond oil, apricot oil, olive oil, or avocado oil. I have sung the praises of avocado oil many a time in some of my other articles, so that’s the one I recommend most heartily.

However, jojoba oil is the most universal oil out there. It’s good for any skin type and has tons of vitamins that are great for your skin. Almond is the lightest oil so if you’re looking for something light and non-greasy, almond is your best bet. Apricot oil is great for mature skin and finally, olive oil is filled with vitamins and is also super moisturizing.

The Recipe

Let’s get to the recipe! It’s super easy and takes barely any time at all to make. The longest you’ll have to wait for this recipe is waiting for it to cool!

Ingredients:
-1/4 cup shea butter
-1/8 cup nourishing oil of your choice

Toss your ingredients in a double boiler or make your own double boiler by placing a heat-safe glass container in boiling water. Melt the shea butter together with the oil and stir well to incorporate. Transfer to the container you want to keep it in and place in the fridge. If you want to make whipped face cream, place it in the freezer for about 15 minutes or until the edges are a bit hardened but the centre is still soft. Whip with an electric hand mixer. Replace in the fridge until fully set.

And you’re done! Enjoy your face moisturizer. Use it twice a day after washing. It will take a bit more time to sink in, so make sure you let it sink into your skin before putting on any makeup. Since there are no preservatives in this recipe, it’ll eventually expire. Make sure you don’t introduce any bacteria in it, always use clean hands! Uncontaminated, it’ll last for about 6 months!
