When entering into a relationship you agree to put all trust into that person. Everything is going terrific and you have fallen head over heels. Then, everything begins to go wrong. All that trust is severed in a matter of seconds. They cheated and you are heartbroken. Speaking from my own experience, being cheated on is the worst feeling. But, it gets better. I did some soul searching before writing this and I thought about how I managed to not only get over my ex, but forgive him.
1. Realize it isn’t your fault.
You did nothing wrong. Sometimes it’s easy to analyze your own behavior when someone else does you dirty. Was I not kind enough? Did I not do enough for him? Regardless of how it happened you have to understand that being cheated on has nothing to do with you and is a reflection on the other person.
2. Get rid of his stuff.
Once your realize he is not the one for you, it’s time to kick him out of your life in every way possible. Get rid of the pictures, the letters, and any gift that pulls at your heart strings. Looking at these things everyday will only make you bitter or sad about what happened, which definitely will not allow you to move on.
3. Get your priorities in line.
Break ups are hard, especially when they’re unexpected and you’re heartbroken, but you can only sulk for so long. You still got a life to live, girl! Take the time you would usually be spending with him, or crying over a tub of Ben & Jerry’s, and get your stuff in order. Figure out what’s next FOR YOU. Take that photography class you’ve been dreaming about, spend more time with the family, or study harder for your classes. Set some kind of goal and work towards achieving it.
4. Have a girls’ night out.
You may have lost a boyfriend, but there are still other people who love you – and actually mean it when they say it. Get your girls and go out. Buy a new dress that makes you feel sexy, and hit up a really nice restaurant or a new club. Once you get out there again, you’ll forget about oh, what’s his name. Maybe not right away, but you will eventually.
5. Get back out there.
Time to get flirting girl! It might be hard at first, but you can move on. Enjoy the single life and allow yourself to explore your options. The single life is fun, but more importantly, it serves as a time to really understand what you want out of life, whether it be in relationships, career, academics or what have you.
6. Remember what you deserve.
You are a great person who deserves to be loved. When someone doesn’t show you that, it may be time to put more consideration into who you allow in your life. You may settle for someone just to have them around, but it doesn’t mean they are going to treat you right. Don’t settle for anything less than you deserve. Once you do that, you’ll never let anyone do you wrong again.
