Here’s How To Distance Yourself From Toxic People For Good

Your mental health and your own happiness is two of the most important things to remember to look after for yourself. This can be easier said than done, especially if you are like me and don’t like hurting people feelings. But doing things to look after your own happiness is all apart of becoming an adult, here is how you can start to distance yourself from toxic people.

Take Time For Yourself

You will most likely know in your heart who in your life is a toxic person, this can take a lot of time to heal from, depending on how deeply they have hurt you or how much of a hold of you they have. I am a firm believer that you have to hold all relationships to the same standard, whether it is a friend. boyfriend/girlfriend or family member everyone has to be held accountable for their actions. If you would break up with a boyfriend/girlfriend for a particular action or personality trait, why would you allow a family member to behave the same way? So in order to evaluate whether or not you have let toxic traits slide, take some time for yourself. Think hard about why you allowed yourself to be treated like that, you don’t need that in your life. Take some time away from them and let the toxins out!

Have A Mature Conversation

If you are not into just cutting people out of your life, it can be a bit harsh and is not everyones style, have a conversation with them before you do so. Tell them what is bothering you, why you shouldn’t be treated they way they are treating you, or that you don’t think it is healthy to be around someone who exhibits the traits that the particular person is. If they are not willing to change, or can not see a problem, or worse reverse the accusation and blame you, I think that it is fair enough to start slowly but surely slowing communication, until eventually they are no longer in your life.

Put Yourself First

Keep this constant reminder in the back of your head, put you first! This should become your new mantra. Never feel bad for putting yourself first in order to protect your own mental health and happiness. Don’t let anyone tell you that you are doing the wrong thing. Only you know whether or not someone is detrimental your health. Listen to your heart and your head and put yourself first! remove any guilt you have. Don’t do a toxic person any favours, you do not deserve to be compromising yourself for a person who does not deserve it. If something does not enrich your life, add happiness, knowledge, experience or culture to your life, you don’t need it. Simple as that. If you have been hurt constantly by a person in your life you may need time to heal and recharge, putting yourself first is the perfect way! Distance yourself from them ASAP.
