So you have decided to eat healthier, and everything is going fine and dandy—until you realize that you are a sugar addict and probably can’t humanly survive without dessert in your life. However, it’s not too late for you. There really are sweet options out there in the world that are not sugar-infested. With these ten genius healthy dessert recipes, you will be able to keep a little bit of natural sugar in your diet without blowing your immune system to smithereens.
1. Banana Soft Serve
This is my absolute favorite healthy recipe, and it’s a whole lot simpler than you think. Take a banana and cut it up into thin slices. Either put the slices in a Ziploc bag or on baking sheet with wax paper. Put in freezer overnight. In the morning, mix the frozen banana until you get a smooth texture like soft serve. Add oatmeal, peanut butter, almond extract, peanuts, etc., to the mix to make your own unique dessert or breakfast. (But no cone. Remember, we’re trying to stay away from all things sugar here.)
2. Honey Peanut Butter Balls
Get together 1 cup dry oatmeal, ½ cup peanut butter, ½ cup flaxseed, 1/3 cup honey, 1 tsp. vanilla extract. Roll up balls and either put them in small cupcake holders or on a try with a wax sheet. Let them cool in the fridge. This is a genius way to still have your dessert and add protein to your diet.
3. Chocolate Syrup
Yes, you can still have your chocolate syrup! And it only uses three ingredients: cocoa powder, honey, and coconut oil. All you have to do is melt the honey and coconut oil in a pot and add the cocoa powder. Mix until smooth, add ingredients until you get the desired consistency.
4. Pumpkin Pie Smoothie
Toss out that can of pie filling and make room for some all-natural pumpkin puree. Take 1 frozen banana, ¼ cup pumpkin puree, 1 1/3 cup spinach, ¼ cup coconut milk, 1/3 cup unsweetened almond milk, and a ½ tsp. pumpkin pie spice, and mix them all in a blender.
If you ever read Percy Jackson and the Olympians, then you’re probably familiar with the food of the gods. Okay, so this is a little bit of a lot different—but it’s still a really genius healthy dessert. All you do is take pineapple, oranges, pecans, cherries, and coconut pieces and mix them together in a bowl. And there you have it: instant ambrosia.
6. Flourless Banana Brownies
Bananas…. Brownies…. This sounds like a completely foreign idea that has no correlation one to the other. However, if you give it a chance, you just may learn to like it. Mix together several ripe bananas until you have a smooth mixture, then add cocoa power and honey. Bake in oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit until center cooks all the way through.
7. Strawberries with Cream Cheese
So cream cheese probably isn’t the healthiest thing on the table for you to eat, but like many things, it’s fine in moderation. Very simply, you set the strawberries upright and add a dollop of cream cheese at the point of each. Simple, right? (And adding some of that healthy chocolate syrup on top of this healthy dessert won’t hurt, either. You’re welcome.)
8. Peanut Butter Cookies
Glory be and hallelujah that natural peanut doesn’t make you sacrifice any of the sweetness that you’re accustomed to. And it works with so many recipes. Take one cup of natural peanut butter, ½ cup coconut sugar, and one egg. Mix them up, roll them up just like normal cookies, and preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Place them all on a baking sheet lined with wax paper and bake for ten to twelve minutes.
9. Date and/or Raisin-stuffed Apples
This very unique healthy dessert recipe is a little bit harder to whip together but totally worth it. Gather 4 crisp apples, 1 tbsp coconut oil, ½ tsp cinnamon, dash each of nutmeg and ginger, ½ cup chopped walnuts, ¼ cup dates/raisins. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and core the apples so they resemble little bowls. Melt coconut oil and combine in bowl with your dry ingredients. Mix well and fill the center of each apple. Place apples in a baking dish of water and bake in over for up to an hour or until they are softened. When you take them out, you can add peanut butter, yogurt, or extra cinnamon to them.
10. Strawberry Popsicle
This genius summer dessert has only two ingredients: strawberry coconut juice and fresh strawberries. It only takes five minutes for you to prepare and a few hours to cool, and voila!—you have your strawberry popsicle. The only thing you need to buy are popsicle sticks and molds. Chop up a pound of strawberries and blend them up with sixteen ounces of strawberry coconut juice. Pour into the molds and insert a popsicle stick in each. Freeze for up to five hours.
