7 Haunted Places Around UMD You Need To Visit

It’s that time of year again, we can finally wake up Green Day and tell them September has come and gone. The temperature is dropping lower than Ester Dean in 2009, and all the basic girls (admit it, embrace it, love it) are carrying around their pumpkin spice lattes. You start to see all the commercials for Halloween movies and you and all of your friends get excited for Halloweekend festivities. If you decide that you want to be a little adventurous this Halloween season, here is a list of haunted places around UMD you and your squad can drive to and have a spine-chilling time! Just remember that some places might not always be open to the public, so visit at your own risk.

1. The Bloody Lane at Antietam’s Battlefield

Where: Near Sharpsburg, Maryland

Check out this spooky old battlefield if you’re looking for a scare. Because this site was where the bloodiest battle of the Civil War took place back in 1862, it’s no surprise that ghosts haunt “Bloody Lane.” Some visitors have reported seeing ghosts still dressed in uniform haunting the grounds!

2. Point Lookout

Where: Scotland, Maryland

Speaking of the Civil War, it would probably be good to mention the massive amount of paranormal activity reported at Point Lookout. During the war, it was used as a hospital and location to hold prisoners.

3. Bladensburg Dueling Grounds

Where: Colmar Manor, MD

When dueling was outlawed, this was where men would go to fight and the spirits of those killed still haunt the grounds. It’s now a popular park, but you should still watch your back walking around here alone!

4. Oxon Hill Cemetery

Where: Oxon Hill, MD

What’s more fright inducing then a cemetery, amirite? This place is crawling with creepy vibes; Night of the Living Dead feels for sure.

5. Baltimore County Almshouse

Where: Cockeysville, Maryland

If you’re one of those people who are terrified by the little kids in horror films, you might want to say “boy, bye” to this one. This house used to serve as a safe house for children whose families were too poor to care for them before it was turned into the headquarters for the Baltimore County Historical Society. Reported activity includes hearing a woman’s voice and seeing the spirits of the children. Definitely one of the most haunted places around UMD.

6. Field of Screams Maryland

Where: Olney, Maryland

This creepy amusement park might be a better fit for those who are looking for a more “haunted house” ambiance. You can buy a ticket and feel at least a little safe knowing that at least this place doesn’t have a paranormal backstory!

7. Six Flags Fright Fest- Six Flags America

Where: Baltimore/Washington D.C.

Don’t let the fact that this place is usually all fun and amusement park games fool you! Check out Fright Fest one night this month if you’re ready to scream from more than just a drop on a roller coaster.
