Having parents around is one of the hardest adjustments to make when you come home from college for the summer. You’re used to having absolutely no one to answer to and basically being able to do what you want. That changes when you come home. It might seem like they’re always breathing down your neck, making you do errands and chores for them or telling you what you can’t do. But, it is possible to live with your parents again, and even get along with them, once you come home. Here are some tips on getting along with your parents over the summer.
Know the expectations.
Talk with them about what they’re expecting from you and what you can expect from them this summer. Negotiate and compromise with them a little so you both can have what you want. They want you in by midnight, but that’s way too early for you. So, tell them you will call them at midnight, give them an update on your night and what time you’re planning on coming home. Both sides can be happy.
Respect that they’ll most likely be sleeping when you come home at 2 am. They don’t live that kind of lifestyle anymore. Instead of making that Easy Mac you’re craving, just slip upstairs and go to bed. Your body will thank you for it tomorrow, too. It’s just like you had to be quiet for your roommate. Also, don’t yell during an argument. Listen to what they have to say, and then calmly make your points. Tantrums are not for adults, which you are now.
Doing chores around the house is a great way to get your parents on your side so they’ll be more willing to let you go out and have your freedom. It shows you’ve (maybe) matured at college, so they’ll have more trust in you.
Spend time with them.
Take some time out of your busy schedule to hang out at home. You miss your friends from high school and you want to spend time with them, but your parents miss you too. You’re only home for 4 months out of the year, you can spend a little time with your family. When they feel included in your life, they’ll give you a little space.
It’s hard for parents to see that their children are growing up. Just give them a little time and they’ll come around eventually. They probably say to you, “You will understand when you have kids.” As hard as it is to admit they are right when they say that – they are.
The biggest thing with getting along with your parents is respect. If you respect your parents, then they’ll respect you! At the end of the day, it’s their house. And you’re setting up the groundwork to have a fun summer without too many arguments!
