Being in college is a constant struggle no matter what school you go to. You wake up every day to an email from PNC reminding you that you have a total $3.65 in your bank account. Now fast forward to Friday night, you and your friends can’t decide what to do because your all balling on the same budget. You’re sick of going to the frats but you can’t order anymore chipotle off of Tapingo because you can probably only afford the delivery fee. Or maybe you are just trying to switch things up. Either way here are 10 free things to do around Kent State University. We pay a ton to go to school, so the least the university can do is provide free activities to do on campus year round. And of course all of these below involve free food.
1. The Glow Games –
2 words. FREE CHICK-FIL-A. Who doesn’t want to run around all night with their friends eating free chick-fil-a and playing laser tag, glow bowling and ton of glow in the dark related games.
2. 80’s/Kentchella –
These parties are known for their huge silent disco’s. There is a different theme every year that takes place in the Rec center. This past year was 80’s which included of course a silent disco, a roller rink , dance classes , tons of prizes and of course free food.
3. Athletic Events –
Football, basketball, volleyball and baseball game tickets are all free to Kent State students. Here you have the opportunity to show school spirt and purchase food on your meal plan. Free stuff is always given to the first 100-500 students there. All Athletic events are free.
4. Black Squirrel Fest-
This festival takes place during first semester. The festival holds a wide range of Kent businesses and university organizations with booths set up. Of course there is free food (would you really go if there wasn’t?)
5. The Fall Festival-
Takes place in Oscar Ritchie field. There are tons of festive fall things to do such as paint and carve pumpkins, ear caramel apples and drink cider.
6. Winter Fest –
Winter fest is usually the Friday of the first week back from winter break. You can ice skate, catch a hockey game, hop in the photo booth friends or even get Henna. Of course is it really a free event without free food. My friends and I live for the s’mores.
7. Movies at the Kiva-
A range of new movies are shown from different genres at the Kiva every Friday and Saturday. You can the movie twice that day once at 8 and the other at 10.
8. Late Night Skate –
Themed ice skating nights at the ice arena. These happen at least twice a month throughout the year and they’re one of the best things to do around Kent State University!
9. Organization Fair-
What better way to get involved in things than going to the organization fair. There are over 250+ on campus organizations set up all around the K with booths waiting for you to go and join.
10. Zombie Run-
It’s exactly how it sounds. People dress up like zombies and hunters, and have a make shift zombie apocalypse around the campus for all those zombie lovers.
I can vouch that all of these activities are worth going to during the year. My friends and I are always looking forward to doing some of these each year. The activities above are in no specific order, so go attend which one’s sound interesting to you. It’s a great way to meet new people. they make cute date ideas and are easy ways to step out of you

Hi, I am Jasmen Gordon a sophomore at Kent State University with major in fashion merchandise and a minor in fashion media. I’m 20 years young with a passion for fashion and the heart of a lifestyle guru. On top of all that I’m a dancer as well. I love to stay busy but always make time for some sacred R&R. Random Fun fact: I like to drink speedy freezes and pretend I have everything figured out.
