After all the glory of move-in day and finally feeling like a real adult, the stress of your first day of classes hits. Feeling like a freshman in high school knowing no one and nothing, but trust me you’re not the only clueless person in the room. Many freshman classes tend to be big lectures and it’s nerve-wracking walking into a room of 50-100 people and not seeing a familiar face. So here are some tips to prep you for the day ahead.
Nothing is more embarrassing than going into the wrong class on the first day. Then having to do the terrible walk of shame out of the class once you realize half way through the class. Make sure you know which class room to go to for each of your classes, and if you’re unsure which classroom to go to, leave enough time to figure it out between your classes so you’re not stuck wandering campus.
First impressions matter and no matter how much you would like to just roll out of bed and throw on some sweats, resist! Try and dress nice for your first day of classes to make a good first impression on your professors and your peers.
Reading your syllabus before your classes is a good way to get ahead. You can have all your dates ready in your planner and come to class prepared with questions concerning it. The syllabus will also provide you what supplies you need for each class so you’ll be able to stock up ahead of time.
Your first day of classes might only consist of going over your syllabus and taking a few notes here and there. So don’t overkill by packing every book and notebook you need for every class. Just stick with a notebook, a pen and your laptop.
Nothing would be worse than walking in late to your first day of class and having to shamefully walk to the front row because all the good seats were taken. To prevent this make sure your alarm is set early enough for you to get ready and get to your class on time, with maybe a little extra time for coffee.
