10 Dating App Icebreakers Men Need To Stop NOW

Dating apps can be great until you have to face the inevitable dating app icebreaker. Most guys are horrible at starting up a conversation on a dating app. If you are a guy, here are 10 icebreakers you need to stop using because speaking for the girls, it’s getting annoying.

1. “What’s your Snapchat?”

If I give you my Snapchat, all you are going to say is “Hey WYD” and then ask for nudes. You might as well just ask for nudes as your opening line because that’s all this message implies. If you actually had any interest in talking to me, maybe actually ask something interesting? If a guy asks for your Snapchat as the first message, don’t even bother responding because that just shows what little effort they put in coming up with an icebreaker. Also, since when did Snapchat become the main form of communication for people? I’d much rather a guy ask for my number instead of my Snapchat.

2. “Your hot”

First of all, use the right “you’re” for goodness sakes! It’s really unattractive when guys can’t even spell one word right. This sounds like more of a cat-call then it does an icebreaker. Plus there’s nowhere really to lead the conversation after this besides “Thank you.” It is really uncreative and honestly just shows the lack of interest that men have in a girl. He’s probably interested in only one thing if he sends this: hooking up.

3. “Hey when are you free?”

He’s just looking to hook up if you get this message. He really isn’t interested in learning about you at all. Since you don’t really know everyone on a dating app, it probably isn’t the best idea to meet up with someone without knowing who they really are. It is a little bit sketchy to receive this message without any background of the person. Maybe ask to FaceTime instead as an alternative or ask some more questions to try to get to know them better. Men need to stop using this as an icebreaker because women aren’t just going to meet up with you immediately after matching. It is literally the start of every Tinder horror story, so in other words, just don’t say this. Women actually want a guy who wants to learn more about them instead of just expecting to hook up right off the bat.

4. Just a couple of emojis or a meaningless GIF

There’s no real way to respond to this. If you just send a couple of random emojis, what are we supposed to say back? There is just no effort that goes into typing emojis as an icebreaker. I’d rather someone just simply say “hey” instead of the waving hand emojis. It just shows a lack of effort on behalf of the man. Using a GIF can be hit or miss. If the GIF has actual words or is funny, it could ignite a conversation but if it’s just a random animal GIF with no context whatsoever, don’t use it. Yes, the puppy is cute but no conversation could be had from it.

5. “What are you looking for on here?”

I know you’re just trying to figure out if we’re on the same page of what we’re looking for, but can you at least ask something else before talking about this? It doesn’t need to be the opening line, it can definitely happen later in the conversation. Most guys who use this are usually looking for something casual, but they don’t want to just straight up say that. Women don’t want to be put on the spot right at the first message. They’d be more than willing to answer this later on when you actually put in the effort to have a real conversation first.

7. “How’s quarantine going for you?”

Recently, this has become the most common dating app icebreaker. I know that there aren’t a ton of interesting things going on at the moment to ask about, but this question needs to stop. It’s just getting overused and repetitive and women are more likely to respond to a question that intrigues them or is unique. The state of the world right now is depressing and quarantine sucks for everyone so we don’t need to keep talking about it. It gets quite annoying when people use the same question over and over again.

8. “Why are you so f***ing cute but so f***ing fat? OH MY GOD FAR. I MEANT FAR.”

I don’t know who would think this would be a good opening line, but men keep using it. I get it’s supposed to be a joke, but it’s just really not funny at all. Men think it is “original” and that it will get a laugh out of a woman, but little do they know it is actually trending on the Internet. I really wonder where this originated from because it really isn’t that intriguing and it certainly doesn’t make me want to keep talking to the man who sends this kind of message.

9. “If you were a fruit you would be a fineapple”

Okay, this one may be significantly better than the other icebreakers, but it is still pretty bad. However, it is slightly more creative. In terms of winning a girl over though, it probably won’t work that well. This one just makes me laugh because of how stupid it sounds.

10. “Sorry it took me so long to message you. I was busy complaining to Spotify about you not being on their hottest singles list.”

This one is more creative than the rest, but it still makes me cringe. It’s also just an excuse if a man doesn’t message you for a month after matching. It would honestly just be better if a man didn’t say anything instead of trying to come up with a creative message about why they didn’t message you. Women are probably just going to ignore you if it’s been months and suddenly you just decide to message them.

I swear men have like a giant book of the same pick up lines that they use over and over again. If you are a man, it’s time to start getting more creative. Maybe ask about something in a woman’s profile? That’s a good start!
