Best Scary Movies To Watch With Your Squad

Watching scary movies is one of the most fun things you can do on a night in with your friends. Huddled under a blanket, lights out, popcorn at the ready, all in preparation to be scared silly. Here are the best scary movies to watch with your squad!

1. The Conjuring

This is definitely one of the scariest movies ever made. The fact that it is based on the true story of a real family who was tormented by an entity in their home only makes it creepier. Instead of relying purely on jump-scares the way some of the other movies on this list do, The Conjuring works hard to create an unsettling feeling that lasts all through the film. You’re never quite sure what horrible thing will happen next. The acting is wonderful and the story itself would be engaging and enjoyable even if the scares were removed completely. It is simply a brilliant movie.

2. Paranormal Activity

Probably the most famous horror movie franchise of the late noughties/2010s, Paranormal Activity is completely wild. From furniture appearing on the ceiling, possessed babies, and people being dragged down the staircase, these movies are often more ridiculous than scary – but that just makes them more fun to watch. Paramount recently announced there is a seventh installment in the works – so get excited for that!

3. Orphan

This 2009 movie is creepy in every sense of the word. The film focuses on a little girl named Esther who is adopted by a family after the loss of their unborn child. The plot of the film is very disturbing and will definitely mess with your head. Unlike most horror films, though, there is nothing supernatural here and Esther’s strange behaviour is completely her own. That makes it perfect for anyone who would rather stay away from films about ghosts, demons, or the undead.

4. The Uninvited

This film has a fantastic cast, starring Emily Browning as the lead character and featuring Elizabeth Banks from Pitch Perfect and Arielle Kebbel. The movie is a psychological horror and is a remake of a Korean movie. It is highly unsettling and will constantly keep you guessing as you try to figure out what is going on and what will happen in the end. It isn’t the scariest of the scary movies on this list, but it has a great story and is a fun watch.

5. Sleeping With The Enemy

This is not a horror movie but still manages to be one of the scariest films ever made. The movie stars Julia Roberts as a woman trapped in an abusive marriage who tries to run from her husband but cannot escape him. Throughout the story, Martin becomes more and more determined to catch his wife and you cannot help but watch through your fingers as Laura’s life is turned on its head. You may never want to date again after watching this, but is a brilliant movie.

6. The Sixth Sense

One of the most iconic movies with the most famous twist, Bruce Willis stars in this 1999 movie by M. Night Shyamalan. Bruce’s character Malcolm teams up with a child named Cole who claims he can “see dead people”. Cole meets a range of ghostly figures and realises they need to deal with their unfinished business before they can move on. He also tries to help Malcolm repair his relationship with his estranged wife. The heartbreaking twist at the end of the movie hurts even when you know it is coming, and the shot of the bodies hanging in the school corridor will haunt you for life.

7. The Woman In Black

Daniel Radcliffe left his Harry Potter routes behind when he took on this ambitious horror movie role. The film opens with three young girls leaping out of a window to their deaths and that certainly sets up the mood for the rest of the movie. Daniel finds himself trapped inside a house haunted by an evil spirit that causes the death of all the children it comes into contact with. The movie is set in the early 20th century which gives it a wonderful period aesthetic as well as having an intriguing story.

8. Don’t Breathe

Don’t Breathe creates a different type of creepy atmosphere to the other scary movies on this list. Instead of jump-scares or an unsettling narrative, the film focuses on building suspense. A group of friends become trapped in the house of a blind man who tries to kill them. As a result of his blindness, the man has a heightened sense of hearing meaning that the slightest noise alerts him to the intruders’ presence. You’ll find yourself cringing every time someone takes a breath.

9. Saw

Specifically the first one. There are nine Saw movies, but this one is the best. Starring the incredibly Cary Elwes, AKA Wesley from The Princess Bride, and Michael Emerson from LOST, this disturbing movie will have you hiding behind a pillow. Two men awake chained in a bathroom and are told that one must kill the other or his family will die. What follows is a story full of gore, twists, terror, and a mystery that will keep you guessing right up to the final moments of the film.

10. Prisoners

This is not a horror movie, but that does not make it any less scary. This terrifying movie stars Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal and focuses on the abduction of two young girls. The film portrays a situation that is all too real for many people, and could easily happen to anyone. As the men hunt down the girls and the list of suspects grows, it becomes clear that whatever happened to the children was not pleasant. The realness of the plot and the harrowing thought of how often this happens in the real world is enough to make this one of the creepiest scary movies on this list.
