The Basic Grocery List Every College Student Needs

As a college student, you are most likely living on your own for the first time. This means you need to buy your own food. Even if you have a meal plan, dining hall food can grow really old, really quickly. Here are a few ideas to get your basic grocery list rolling. Just make sure you keep your meals as healthy as possible, even though you are constantly on the go.

1. Breakfast of Champions

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. For college students, it is important to start your day out right and put your best foot forward. Eggs are a breakfast staple, whether you like them scrambled, sunny side up,  or in an omelet, these should be a part of your basic grocery list. Muffins and bagels come in a variety of flavors, so you will be able to find one you like. Fruit salad is also a great and healthy breakfast. Cold pizza from the night before is always a great option as well.

2. Lunch

Sometimes, you have time to stop somewhere to eat with friends, but if you are slammed with classes, assignments, or an internship, pack your lunch. Sandwiches are always quick, so pick up some bread. Whether you like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches or lunch meat, there is something for everyone. If there is a microwave available, take microwavable soup or pasta. Many stores also have pre-packaged lunches, such as sandwiches or salads, making lunch grab-and-go.

3. Dinner

Between organizations and homework, evenings can be busy. Eating at a dining hall can be a drag. For a simple meal on your basic grocery list, Ramen or easy-to-make mac and cheese are great options. Make your parents proud by heating up some vegetables, like broccoli or green beans, at least a few times a week. Sides such as fries are relatively simple to heat up. Save money ordering out by heating up a make-at-home pizza in the oven. There are burgers that can be easily heated up in the microwave.

4. Snacks

Whether you want a quick pick-me-up between classes or a little break between assignments, snacks are a great way to get some extra energy to keep moving and stay motivated. For a healthy snack, grab some pre-sliced cheese and crackers. Granola bars or protein bars are healthy and come in a variety of flavors. Yogurt or pudding cups are simple and quick. For those long, stressful days, grab a pint (or more) of your favorite flavor of ice cream. Microwavable popcorn is great to have on hand for those Netflix binge watches.

5. Beverages

Do not forget to grab drinks beyond ones that have alcohol in them. Sports drinks are great to have available for those times when you are sick or are recovering from a long night out. Instant hot chocolate is a delicious item to have for when you need to trek across campus in the cold or snow. Save money by buying coffee and making it at home. Have soda for when friends come over to study and energy drinks for an energy boost. Be sure to have bottled water in case of a power outage and milk to keep your bones strong. Juices and lemonades are great for breakfast.
