8. Canvas will be your new bestfriend.<\/h2>\n

You have to check canvas (and your email) every day to know what\u2019s happening in your courses. Plus, it lets the lecturers know who the engaged ones are in their course. I wish someone had told me this when I was a first year, one of the best tips for University of Auckland first years.<\/p>\n

9.\u00a0Know that when you go down to ic0 to study, you won’t!<\/h2>\n

You might think it\u2019s a good idea to study in ic0, but you will most likely see a friend and have a really looooong \u201cchat\u201d…<\/p>\n

10.\u00a0Memorise every door in your lecture theatres.<\/h2>\n

There are a million reasons that you could be late for class. It might be because your bus never came, or you forgot to set your alarm. Either way, the most humiliating feeling is to walk in your lecture and disrupt the lecturer. Walk in from the door farthest from the lecturer, to avoid doing \u2018THE WALK OF SHAME\u2019.<\/p>\n

11.\u00a0You are going to have a love\/hate relationship with fire drills.<\/h2>\n

Whether you like it or not, fire drills still happen in uni. It might be for the best (end a boring class early) or worst (end your test early). You should always be mindful of this. Oh and don\u2019t forget – stop, drop and roll!<\/p>\n

12. Never park near Albert Park.<\/h2>\n

If you park near Albert Park, you are better off asking the police for a parking ticket.<\/p>\n

13. If you’re from the shore, good luck.<\/h2>\n

Taking the 881 bus will be a pain. GG.<\/p>\n

14. Make sure to sign up for text notifications for exam day.<\/h2>\n

Their texts sometimes arrive late \u2013 and by late, I mean it could be an hour or a week after your actual exam. But hey, if they do come on time, they\u2019re pretty handy.<\/p>\n

15. Use the AUSA calendar given to you on the first day.<\/h2>\n

Sign up for AUSA. You have nothing to lose and an AUSA calendar to gain. As soon as you\u2019re given your deadlines \u2013 note them down!<\/p>\n

16. Talk to strangers!<\/h2>\n

You never know who you may meet on campus!<\/p>\n

17. Never buy new books, unless you absolutely have to.<\/h2>\n

Join these Facebook groups: \u201cSecond Hand Books \u2013 Auckland Uni\u201d and \u201cUoA Second Hand Books \u2013 Faculty of Arts\u201d. Chances are, other people already have the books you need. Just give a shout out with their titles or a simple \u201cBuying textbooks for LIFE101\u201d will do. Most of them are in VERY good condition and are less than half the original price. \u00a0Easily one of the best tips for University of Auckland first years. I saved so much. You\u2019re welcome.<\/p>\n

18. Get coffee from HSB or the engineering building.<\/h2>\n

Everybody needs a dose of caffeine once in a while, and the cheapest and nearest place you could get it from are the engineering and HSB buildings.<\/p>\n

19. Again, if you’re from the shore and need to take the bus home\u2013 take the 881 from\u00a0the stop in front of St. Pierre’s Sushi!<\/h2>\n

Especially after 12pm, you\u2019ll most likely stand or even worse – won\u2019t even allowed to ride the bus \u2018cause it\u2019s already full. If you take it from this stop, then you\u2019re literally one stop ahead of other North Shore-ians.<\/p>\n

20. Do not skip tutorials!<\/h2>\n

This is where you’ll actually learn! ‘Nuff said. Simple, yet probably the best of the tips for University of Auckland first years.<\/p>\n

21. Stay away from pigeons!<\/h2>\n

They steal your food.\u00a0Need I say more?<\/p>\n

22. Take a deep breath and enjoy yourself.<\/h2>\n

You will be overwhelmed by the amount of workload you have. But trust me, your first year will be nothing compared to the coming years. Stay strong. You\u2019ve got this. Don\u2019t forget to party every now and then, treat yourself to a weekend off uni work and enjoy the experience. You are in uni to study and learn, yes. But the most valuable lessons in life are encountered through experience.<\/p>\n
