It\u2019s pretty much a given that at some point during your time at university, you\u2019re going to end up with a bank balance that makes you feel more than a little uncomfortable. That doesn\u2019t mean, however, that you have to stop having a life until payday. Read on to find some ideas for free and cheap things you can do when you’re broke AF at La\u00a0Trobe University, Bundoora Campus.<\/p>\n

Free\u00a0Things<\/h2>\n

1. Go for a walk.<\/h2>\n

Even if you\u2019re not overly athletic, going for a walk can be fun or at least relaxing. It\u2019s a good way to refresh your mind if you\u2019ve been studying all day and you might even come across the campus ducks.<\/p>\n

2. Go to the park.<\/h2>\n

Parks aren\u2019t only for small children. There\u2019s plenty of room to kick a ball around if that\u2019s your thing and the swings are always fun \u2013 just remember to be mindful of children if they\u2019re around.<\/p>\n

3. Watch something on Netflix.<\/h2>\n

This one could technically fall under the \u2018cheap\u2019 category instead depending on whether it\u2019s your account or not but all you really need is an internet connection.
\nBonus points for this one if you have a friend who lives on Chisholm College and you can make use of the cinema room.<\/p>\n

4. Visit a friend.<\/h2>\n

Friendship doesn\u2019t cost anything and sometimes it\u2019s nice to just sit around and chat.<\/p>\n

5. Go for a picnic.<\/h2>\n

You obviously need food for a picnic so if you really want to get technical this isn\u2019t free but if you use food you already have in the house it\u2019s close enough.<\/p>\n

There are plenty of places on campus where you can relax in the sun and get a tan if that\u2019s your thing. If not, you can get sunscreen pretty cheap and the warmth is rather nice.<\/p>\n

7. Read a book.<\/h2>\n

Sure, you can download pretty much any title straight to your phone or tablet instantly these days but sometimes it\u2019s nice to have real paper and ink in front of you.<\/p>\n

8. Go window shopping.<\/h2>\n

Even if you don\u2019t buy anything it\u2019s still fun to wander around a shopping centre and look at what\u2019s on offer. Plus you can make a list of things you want to buy when you get paid.<\/p>\n

9. Sit and watch the ducks.<\/h2>\n

They\u2019re pretty awesome little critters and can be quite interesting to watch.<\/p>\n

10. Take a nap.<\/h2>\n

When all else fails, go to sleep and deal with the world later.<\/p>\n

Cheap Things<\/h2>\n

1. Go on a maccas date.<\/h2>\n

It\u2019s literally right across the road and even if you can\u2019t afford a meal you can get frozen drinks or ice-cream for a dollar.<\/p>\n

2. Go to a group exercise class at the gym.<\/h2>\n

This is free if you have a membership or $7.30 at the student rate. It\u2019s also a great way to make new friends and getting fit is an added bonus.<\/p>\n

3. Go for coffee.<\/h2>\n

You can get coffee for less than $5 a cup pretty much anywhere on campus and quite a few cafes around have cheap caffeinated goodness as well.<\/p>\n

4. Head into the city.<\/h2>\n

For the price of your train trip you\u2019ve got an almost endless list of things to do. You can wander around all day and not get bored or if you want specific entertainment you can watch the street performers or go to places like the museum that have free entry for students.<\/p>\n

5. Pizza at Stollies.<\/h2>\n

Believe it or not, a trip to Stollies can actually be quite cheap. If you\u2019re not there to drink your visit can cost as little as $5 with their student pizza menu or if you\u2019ve got a bit more cash their $15 lunch menu doesn\u2019t disappoint.<\/p>\n

6. Play pool.<\/h2>\n

There are plenty of places around the uni where all you have to surrender for a game of pool is a gold coin.<\/p>\n

7. Go op shopping.<\/h2>\n

While it\u2019s not everyone\u2019s cup of tea, op shopping is a fun way to pass time and maybe even pick up some pretty awesome things on the cheap.<\/p>\n

8. Get a puzzle book.<\/h2>\n

For a couple of dollars you\u2019ve got a way to pass time for hours.<\/p>\n

9. Go to Kmart.<\/h2>\n

Everyone knows that Kmart is pretty much every poor uni student\u2019s favourite place. The Summerhill store is open 24\/7 and you\u2019ll almost always find something you like.<\/p>\n

10. Redecorate your room.<\/h2>\n

Obviously if you live in a rental your options are going to be a bit limited but it\u2019s surprising how much of a difference a change in furniture positions, a few cushions and a new bed spread can change a room.<\/p>\n

11. Go online shopping!<\/h2>\n

Kind of like the earlier mentioned window shopping but you can do it from the comfort of your sofa. You can find pretty much anything you want online and even if you can\u2019t afford what you want right now you can put it in your virtual cart to come back to later.<\/p>\n
