If all you’ve been yearning for is clear skin – you’ve come to the right place. I’ve written the ultimate guide to getting your glow on that follows the Korean daily skincare routine. Koreans regard flawless skin very highly; so it’s no wonder that majority of the population appears to be blessed with beautiful skin. Before adopting this routine, I recommend finding out what skin type you are – some skin types react differently to products or steps in any given routine.

1. Remove all that makeup and grime unless you want to look like a miner in the morning.

Even if you wear makeup during the day, it’s important to cleanse your face before sleeping due to any other particles you could have been exposed to. An oil-based cleanser is key here; and if you’re trying to save some of that hard-earned cash, coconut oil will serve this purpose well.

2. Rinse and repeat.

A double cleanse is essential to fully remove any remaining residue lingering on your skin. Using a water-based cleanser for this step ensures you’re not damaging your skin with harsh chemicals – whilst cleansing it at the same time.

 3. Exfoliate all your troubles (and dead skin cells) away.

Keep in mind that you should not be exfoliating more than 3 times a week, especially if you have sensitive skin. Also, let the scrub do the work when exfoliating – gently massage your skin as to not cause any micro-tears. This step allows all your dead skin to be washed away – leaving smooth, polished skin in its place.

4. Rehydrate your squeaky-clean skin with a toner.

Using a toner is probably my favourite part of my skincare routine. This step is crucial in re-hydrating your skin, allowing for better absorption of the products to follow. Remember to choose a toner based on your skin’s current needs – for example when I’m in need of hydration I use pure rosewater (also a lot cheaper than Mario Badescu.) 5. Essence is essential.

Essences exist in many forms, and although it can be difficult to choose the one right for you, I can guarantee you this step will be extremely beneficial in achieving the flawless skin look. All you need to do is pat in a few drops, and let your skin absorb it for a minute or two before commencing the next step.

6. Time to target that pimple you’ve had for the past week.

This ‘treatment’ step is essentially when you spot-correct blemishes, pigmentation or any other skin concern you currently have using a specific booster or serum. Gently tap onto the skin and give it a minute before continuing.

 7. Transform into Caspar the Friendly Ghost with a Korean sheet mask.

Another essential at the heart of the Korean skincare routine, sheet masks are used for that extra hydration boost. These also work to brighten skin and allows for a calming 15-20 minutes before bed. Unfortunately, unlike clay masks, it has been scientifically proven no-one can look good in a sheet mask.

8. Under-eye circles begone!

Before moisturising your face, consider adding an eye cream to your routine. The skin surrounding the eye area is quite delicate, and if you’ve been lacking your nightly 8 hours of sleep this step helps to rehydrate the area – preventing harsher dark circles from developing. Note: never rub, always gently tap into the skin.

9. The final step in your night-time skincare routine.

Moisturising allows for the final piece of the hydrating puzzle to be completed upon your face. Like essences, moisturisers come in many different forms, its just up to you to decide what type your skin needs. When patting it on the face, don’t forget to include your neck (always in an upwards motion), to prevent sagging of the skin that comes with age.

10. Glow, but stay protected from Mother Nature.

Only necessary for your daytime routine, a good sunscreen (SPF 50+) is vital in shielding that precious skin of yours away from harsh UV rays. Constant exposure to the sun without protection will quicken the aging process, not to mention increase the risk of skin cancer.

And there you have it. The 10 simple yet effective steps of the Korean daily skincare routine to put you on the path to clear, flawless skin. However, the best thing you can do for your skin is eating well, drinking plenty of water, and getting a good night’s rest. May the Gods of good skin bless you all.
