7 Ways To Refresh Your Dorm Room

Whether you spend all your time in your dorm room or only are ever really in there to sleep occasionally, the aesthetic you were going for when you moved in can get a little old. Maybe your tastes changed. Maybe that fuchsia pink comforter looked way cuter online than in person. Whatever the case, it’s time to give that dingy dorm room a fresh new look. Here are 7 ways to refresh your dorm room to get that new glow for half the work.

1. Reposition Your Bed

If you can. I get it. Not everyone has the ability to move their bed to the other side of the room. But if you can, getting that bed on another wall will open up the space and give it a whole new vibe. If you can’t move the bed, reposition how you set it up. Put the pillows along the side instead of at the head of your bed. Get new pillows. Whatever the case, a subtle change to your bed can mean a whole new refresh for your dorm.

2. Change Your Curtains

You may not realize how big of an impact your curtains have on your room until you switch them out. The black blackout curtains your mom said you needed were actually too dark and switching them to a softer shade makes the room look so much lighter and brighter. Curtains may be just an accent, but they are an important one.

3. Get Organized

It’s hard to feel like you’re in a refreshing space when you have free-floating clutter with no real home. Go to the Dollar Store, get some colorful plastic bins and mason jars, and now that mess of a built-in book shelf, looks like something out of Khloe Kardashian’s pantry. Just giving something a home and containing a mess to a box, gives the illusion that you’re organized, which is better than actually being organized.

4. Clean Out Your Closet

Do you really need your old prom dress for Spring Formal when you know you’re just going to out and buy yourself a new one? What about that t-shirt from that one frat guy that’s ugly, but was free? Or those clothes you brought with you from high school that you haven’t worn once since starting college? It’s time to ditch all of those things and then some. Your dorm room will never feel more refreshed than once you drop your old clothes off at Goodwill or sent some of it back home. Even if it doesn’t look all that refreshed, you sure will feel refreshed once you do it.

5. Decorate That Mini Fridge

Let’s be real. It’s plain. Boring. And probably holds up your TV. Also, you probably haven’t even given it a second thought outside of holding all your water bottles. If you get a little crafty with colorful tap and stickers, you can turn that boring mini fridge into a cute statement piece.

6. Decorate Your Desk

When I say, “decorate your desk,” I don’t mean the things you put on it. In fact, less is more when it comes to desks. This is the place that gets cluttered the fastest, so you should be very selective in what you display on it. However, if you take some removable wallpaper and stick it to the surface area of your desk, not only are you adding a unique statement piece, but you’re bringing life to something that probably has swear words carved into it.

7. Christmas Lights

Enough said. Christmas lights solve all of your dorm décor problems. Hang them on the wall, wrap them around your bed post, or pin them around your desk. You could literally leave them a glowing ball on your shelf and suddenly your room has been transformed from a concrete cell block with a university flag on the wall, to a cute, magical fairy garden worthy of all the insta posts.
