10 Reasons Why Your Spring Fling Isn't Worth It

A spring fling can sound so appealing. Find someone amazing during that precious Spring Break week and just spend the week being that cute, nauseatingly sweet couple. It is something right out of a RomCom movie because you only live once! And why would you want to deny yourself the pleasure of young love? Except there are many complications and downsides to having a spring fling. Here are 10 reasons why your spring fling isn’t worth your time or your precious week of fun.

1. Idealized Week

You meet him on a Monday and you say goodbye on a Sunday. And for seven days, everything was perfect! You could talk about anything with this guy and you had all the time in the world to stay up late and watch movies or take long walks along the beach and just look up at the stars. But that wasn’t reality; it was a vacation but it just seems so perfect that it becomes an idealized fantasy. Real relationships don’t live up to the one that got away.

2. Established Boundaries

Say that you aren’t looking for The One on your holiday but instead, you just want to have some short-term fun. You might know that but your new boo doesn’t. One week is a very short amount of time to meet a man, establish that he’s the one you want to have a fling with, and make sure that he understands that all you want is this one week. Then you still have to worry about someone accidentally catching feelings!

3. Do You Want To Commit Or Do You Want To Play?

Sometimes, the magic of the spring fling is that you just happen to meet someone and he happens to be really amazing. Now while getting to know the man and seeing how you guys click, you also have to decide if you want a long term relationship or this week is meant to be only this one week. Now make sure he also knows what he wants and you both want the same thing.

4.  Rebound After Break Up

Some quick lovin’ after a hard break up sounds like the perfect reason to have a spring fling. But that abrupt goodbye at the end of the week will only add to the hurt that you feel from that horrible break up. Take some time for yourself and give the love life a break before you decide to jump back into a new relationship, even a short-term one.

5. Mixed Signals

You might have said at the beginning of the week, that this will be a one-week thing and there wasn’t going to be an ‘after’. But suddenly, he’s kissing your forehead and holding you through the night. Or you are hugging for a second or two longer than necessary. The mixed signals that you’re sending each other make everyone wonder if this will become a longer-than-just-one-week thing. And it’s hard to avoid mixed signals and even harder to sort them out within one week.

6. Saying Good-Bye

This amazing, awesome week is finally ending and you guys have to say good-bye. It sucks. But the big question is what do you do now? Do you just end it all and never see or talk to each other again? Do you try to be friends? Do you try long distance? There are so many unanswered questions and it makes the good-bye so uncertain. You just wished spring break could last a little longer.

7. Missing Him

Whether or not you decided that you would give this relationship a try at long distance, you miss the guy that you spent such a perfect week with. It’s hard not to idealize that week and this man when everything seemed so easy and that time together was so great. It only makes being home alone so much harder.

8. Long Distance Sucks

Say you guys did decide that this relationship was worth a try and decided to make it a long distance relationship for now. But now it’s back to the real world and life gets in the way. You both have to juggle school, work, and all the other drama that everyday life has; it’s hard to find the time to talk to each other when you no longer have all day and all night.

9. One-Sided Feelings

Feelings can fizzle out especially if you don’t have a strong basis to stand on before you decided to do long distance. Everything was great and easy when you were together all the time that week. But if your feelings for each other aren’t evenly matched and someone is always trying harder than the other to make this relationship work, your spring fling may become more trouble than it was worth. One week of perfection isn’t worth months and months of waiting for a text back.

10. Maybe, Summer?

If you do want a short term relationship but you just want more time, consider summer break. You will still have that short-lived love but you will get more time with him. Instead of having to say good-bye after seven days and not knowing where this relationship is going, you will have three months to either let this fast-paced love fizzle out or a good base for a long distance relationship.
