Apple Or Microsoft – How To Decide

Apple or Microsoft? This is one of the most important decisions to make when considering a new comptuer. Here's how to help you decide!

Marvel or DC? Jets or Giants? McDonald’s or Burger King? These are some of the most divisive questions that can be asked today. But none more so than Apple or Microsoft. The two companies are some of, if not the biggest names in technology. Nowadays, when getting a computer, more often than not, you have to decide between the two. But how do you do that? Here are a few points to consider when deciding between Apple or Microsoft.

1. BUSINESS OR PLEASURE?

One of the first things you need to do when considering which computer to buy is what exactly you’d be using it for. Microsoft has a number of programs that are widely used in business applications, such as Word, Powerpoint, Excel, Office, etc. Mac computers, on the other hand, are often geared to more creative programs, such as iMovie, Garageband, and certain Adobe programs.

2. SECURITY RISKS

This one’s a little trickier. Microsoft is arguably the popular of the two brands, so most virus-makers tend to target that brand as opposed to the less popular Mac. But that doesn’t mean virus-makers don’t target Mac, they just do it less often. And while each company is releasing updates to take care of security risks, there are more anti-virus programs built for Windows computers than MacBooks. So, the question is would you rather have a computer that’s targeted more often, but has more defenses, or a computer that isn’t targeted often, but doesn’t have as many defenses.

3. HARDWARE

It’s safe to say that Mac hardware is a lot less adaptable/changeable compared to Windows. If you like building your own computer, most people would point you toward Windows, as you can switch out bad or broken parts more easily. If you’re just looking for a simple laptop, then I would argue for a MacBook. And if you want to customize it, you’d have to consult their online store.

4. ACCESIBILITY & SIMPLICITY

In my opinion, Apple wins this one. Their Launchpad and Dock Menu System is much better than Windows Start Menu. Additionally, the way a Mac can organize and sort all your files in a variety of ways is a lot smoother when compared to Microsoft. If this is a big issue for you, then Apple may be the way to go.

5. POWER HOUSE

One of the many things you’ll hear about Microsoft and Apple is that Microsoft has the processing power, but not a lot of apps, and that Apple has a lot of apps, but not a lot of processing power. It depends on which you want more.

6. GAMING PREFERENCES

Touching back to the Business or Pleasure section earlier, what some people don’t know is that some games can only be bought and played on either a Apple or Microsoft computer. There are some that you can play on both, but quite a few are either one or the other. If this has a say in your final decision, I highly recommend seeing which games can be played on either system.

7. PRICE

What many consider a clincher in deciding which computer to buy, the prices of these two computers may surprise you. Mac computers are decidedly more expensive than Microsoft computers. If you want to build your own Microsoft computer from scratch, that could be considered the most frugal option. How I personally deal with this issue when buying a computer is this: how long do I plan on using this computer? If you plan on switching your computer out for a newer one five years down the line, as opposed to 10 or even 15 years, then Microsoft may be the way to go.

When it comes down to it, a lot of it is preference when buying a computer. These are only some of the ways to differentiate between Apple or Microsoft. The decision is ultimately yours. Are there any things to consider when buying a computer that you know about? Let us know in the comments below!
