We all have misconceptions of how life is in a major city, especially when it comes to moving to NYC. People move to New York City to pursue their dreams in theater, entertainment and business. New York City transplants believe their experience will be the same as their favorite television characters and celebrities. Some women move to New York City to live like the women of Sex in The City. As someone who is from New York, I’ve met people who think coming to New York City will fix their problems. Sorry to let you down but New York City is like any other city. If you’re running away from problems back home or trying to start over, there will be struggles and some of those issues will resurface into your life. Here are 10 misconceptions people have about moving to New York City.

1. Sex In The City Complex

I’ve heard plenty stories of women moving to New York City to unleash their inner Carrie Bradshaw. This misconception is attainable unless your family is rich or dating someone with old money. Don’t move to New York if you and your friends are thinking of recreating Sex In The City. This is definitely a misconception people have about moving to NYC.

2. Brooklyn Is Cheap

Brooklyn USED to be cheap! Brooklyn is the mecca of city gentrification. Its clogged with acai eating vegan hipsters and people whose parents are still paying their rent! Rent in Brooklyn isn’t cheap! Expect to live in a shoe box, if you snag a good deal! If you plan on commuting from Brooklyn to Manhattan, Good luck! The L train will be closed for 18 months in 2019! Just stay out of Brooklyn!

3. Taking The Train Will Be Easy

New Yorkers are always on the run, so be ready to speed walk! One way to piss a New Yorker off is not knowing how to swipe a MetroCard. You will get roasted, If you fail to properly swipe a MetroCard! It’s important to know which train you’re taking because there are 27 subway lines and 472 stations! It’s easy to get lost, so start practicing subway etiquette. This is definitely a misconception people have about moving to NYC.

4. Falling In Love Immediately

If you’re moving to NYC hoping to find love, it won’t happen immediately! It’s a huge city and everyone is hustling to make it to the top of their career. Dating apps like Tinder and Bumble may help but it’s up to the person to take the initiative to get to know you!

5. Everyone’s Rude

New Yorkers are not rude, they’re REAL and HONEST! If you have a friend from New York, they will tell you the truth! If you can’t handle the truth, NYC isn’t the city for you! We’re not afraid to tell someone if we dislike them. This is definitely a misconception people have about moving to NYC.

6. The Hope Of Getting An Apartment Like The Show Friends

Rent is not cheap in NYC. Don’t expect to get an apartment like Monica and Rachel from “Friends”. The “Friends” apartment rent would cost $4,500 a month today! It’s best to settle in a cheaper side of town or move to Jersey and commute.

7. The City Is Expensive

All major cities are expensive but it depends on which part of town you’ve chosen to establish yourself. There are five boroughs in New York City, depending on the borough there’s a chance of finding places that won’t drain your bank account!

8. The City Is Dangerous

We’re always surrounded by danger. Whether it’s being at home or outside on the streets, we always have to dodge dangers. It’s important to be street smart and trust your gut feeling! Be careful of your surroundings and analyze the setting.

People usually mistake Manhattan being the only location in NYC. There are five boroughs in NYC, so go out and explore. Every borough has a different vibe and way of movement. You’ll be amazed on how different people from Harlem are from Queens natives.

10. NYC Will Fix All Your Issues

Good luck, If you’re moving to run away from problems. You can’t run away from life and it’s unexpected turns! You will face issues living in NYC, whether its struggling to fit in or make friends. You will feel out of place but adjusting to a new city takes time. Stop running away from your problems, it’s time to face your issues!
