In my experience, taking general intro classes your first semester of your freshman year is always the way to go. It lets you get an idea of the different fields of study! Here are just a few of the best intro classes at Elon that students, especially freshmen, should definitely take.

1. IDS 115: Public Speaking

I get it. Public speaking is terrifying. This is exactly why freshmen should take this course!  Public speaking is a skill that you will need in almost ever career path later in life, and definitely in most other classes at Elon. This class will help anyone move out of their comfort zone and become more comfortable with speaking in front of others. In addition to this class being extremely useful, it’s only half a semester! So if you really don’t like giving speeches, 7 weeks is all you need to handle. This quick and useful course is number one of the intro classes at Elon you need to take.

2. POL 111: American Government

Government class sounds very boring. However, even for people who have no interest in political science, this class is still highly recommended. As students transition from high school to college, they will notice a significant increase in the amount of talk surrounding current events on college campuses. In current society, a lot of the everyday current events discuss news in government. Even for people with no interest in this field, learning about the basis of the government and political science is important. You never know, maybe this class could spark your interest in majoring or minoring in political science!

3. ECO 111: Principles of Economics

For the same reason that American Government is a recommended class for freshmen, so is this one of all the intro classes at Elon. As college students, people need to learn how the economy is run and what is does for us because when students graduate. They will have to deal with their own money and in doing that, they need knowledge of the functioning of the economy. For that very reason, this class is one that all students, especially freshmen, should take.

4. Any Visual or Performing Arts Class

Not many people will think that of all the classes this is one of the intro classes at Elon they should take. There are so many reasons why you should consider taking some kind of arts class during your freshman year. For one, most visual or performing art classes are so much fun! You’re not sitting in an uncomfortable chair and listening to a professor give lectures about the course material. Instead, you’re actually getting up and interacting with different art forms. These classes typically have more freedom in terms of the curriculum than most regular classes do. This makes them more fun because you can personalize the class to fit what you find most interesting. Lastly, trying one of these things can bring you out of your comfort zone and possibly introduce you to a whole new area of interest that you never would have considered before!

5. COR 110: The Global Experience

This class is required for all freshmen. It’s a good thing because even if it wasn’t, all freshmen should take it. This class is different because it is taught by many teachers from many different fields of study and there are many different topics.  For some students, their COR110 class might be about the drug culture in United States’ history, the interconnections of feminism and multiculturalism, or on Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. Every COR110 class is different and interesting in its own way. These classes all focus on the world, and the global effect of the different topics that each class covers.  While this is a required class, all freshmen should love this class, or at least learn with an open-mind!
