College near NYC is the best decision you could make. Are you currently working through the college process trying to find the right school for you? Can’t decide if you want to be placed in the hustle and bustle of a city? I was in your shoes about a year ago; I chose a school extremely close to New York City. Hopefully, reading about my favorite parts of attending a college near NYC will help you decide if a big city is where you see yourself spending the next four or more years of your life!

1. Being Able to Let Out Your Inner Theater Nerd

Being so close to NYC throughout most of the year allows me to frequently attend Broadway and Off-Broadway shows. If you’re a tourist and have a limited about of time in NYC, you will most likely end up paying absurd prices to see a show because you know that it is your only opportunity, especially during peak times. Living close to the city, one is able to purchase tickets in advance for a reasonable price. Although I have only just completed my first semester of college, I have already seen one Broadway show and one Off-Broadway show for free thanks to the Office of Student Leadership and Engagement at my school.

2. The Food Is Delicious

NYC is known for its diversity. Not only is NYC diverse with regards to the types of people who inhabit and visit the city, but also the food options available. Any kind of cuisine you’re craving, there is most likely a spot in the city to get it. After a long day of classes, one of my favorite things to do is scroll through food blogs and write down or save the names of the unique foods around the city and try them during the weekends or during my free time. Some of my favorite spots to grab food around the city are Max Brenner, Planet Hollywood, Schmackarys, and Brother Jimmy’s BBQ.

3. Being Able To Learn From Experience

You have most likely heard someone say that if you can make it in NYC, that you can make it anywhere. I believe this to be true because although one may learn at a school or in a classroom, the knowledge and skills that one receives from experience is invaluable. Before attending college, I lived a fairly sheltered life and knew that in college I wanted to step outside of my comfort zone. That is what I have been able to do by attending college near NYC. Although I have easy access to NYC, I sometimes encounter problems that require me to use my critical thinking and problem solving skills. Learning the structure and public transportation system of the city, along with its formal and informal rules can be quite difficult at times. Although it may take months to get acquainted with the city, your failures and successes allow you to become a more well-rounded person.

4. Having the Opportunity to People Watch

Due to the fact that NYC is highly populated, one is able to take in the beauty of individuality. One of my favorite things to do in the city is people watch. Although you may go specifically to the city to people watch, you do it subconsciously as you are surrounded by thousands of other people living, working, or exploring. Some of my favorite places to explore are Times Square and the West Village. You never know who you are going to see if you were to spend even one hour in the city!

5. Having the Best of Both Worlds

Although I attend college close to NYC, I am still far enough to enjoy the benefits that come with living in a suburban area. Even though I love the chaos of the city, it;s nice to  attend school in a more relaxed area; I can focus on my studies without distractions. Having the city as a resource to further my education is beneficial. I am able to have experiences that I most likely would not be able to otherwise.
