8 Quick Hairstyles That Will Save You an Immense Amount of Time

By: Lauren Shank

If you’re anything like me, you’re constantly on the go. When rushing out the door, having some quick go-to hairstyles is helpful. These eight hairstyles take less than five minutes, from bubble ponytails to chignon buns. Numerous websites recommend braided hairstyles as a time saver. If you aren’t too experienced with braiding, don’t worry, these hairstyles are simple and braid-free.

1. Ponytail with a Twist

Are you tired of putting your hair up in the same ponytail every day? This hairstyle takes a childhood classic and  turns it into an elegant look. This hairstyle is perfect for brunch with friends or working in the office.

  1. Tie your hair back into a low ponytail.
  2. Above the hair band, part the hair into two sections. This hole should be big enough to pull the ponytail through.
  3. After parting the hair, twist and pull the ponytail up and through the hole you created and pull it tight for a sleek look. If you want it to look messier, pull two strands of hair out in the front for a framing effect.

2. Bubble Ponytail

This hairstyle is versatile and perfect for when you want to do something fun with your hair. The bubble pony works wonders if you’re looking to harness your thick hair or add volume to thin hair. It also works excellent with clean or greasy hair, making this a cute go-to look. Straightening the hair will give you a sleeker look if you have curly hair and a little extra time on your hands.

  1. Part your hair and gather it to one side.
  2. Wrap a hair band around where you want the bubble pony to start.
  3. A couple of inches down, wrap another hair band. Continue this until you reach the end of your hair or where you want the bubbles to
  4. Once you’ve finished tying the hair bands, gently pull apart each section for volume (the hair in between the hair bands).

This style can be worn in a high pony or a low pony. For a high bubble pony, put your hair in a regular ponytail. Then complete steps 2-4. If you want this hairstyle to be extra fun, use colorful hairbands.

3. Messy Half up- Half Down Bun

This hairstyle takes less than a minute and is a casual but classy look. I especially like this hairstyle when I don’t have time to wash my hair or when I’m indecisive about how to tackle my hair. You might want to have a few bobby pins nearby if you have thicker hair.

  1. Using your thumbs, pick up the hair right about the hair and gather it up into a small ponytail.
  2. With a brush, tease the underside of your hair until it reaches the volume you desire.
  3. Then, twist the hair and wrap it around to form a bun, secure with a hairband. If needed, fasten loose strands with bobby pins.
  4. Take out strands of hair near the front and gently pull the bun to create a loose look.

4. Chignon

Whereas a bun is wrapped around itself, a chignon is hair tucked under or around an accessory. The prime characteristic of a chignon hairstyle is the placement, typically sitting at the nape of the neck. Its full name, “chignon de cou,” roughly translates to that placement. The beauty of this hairstyle is that it works for all textures of hair and the majority of hair lengths. As long as you can pull your hair back, you can rock a chignon. This hairstyle takes a bit longer but can be a quick formal hairstyle with practice. The chignon’s appeal is that it appears complex and elegant while still being easy to execute.

  1. Divide the hair into three sections, one in the back and two in the front. The two front sections start from the top of the head to the top of the ear.
  2. Gather the back section of your hair and tie it into a low ponytail.
  3. Like the twisted ponytail, gently pull apart two sections above the holder, creating a hole for the ponytail to go through. Again, you may have to loosen the ponytail.
  4. Taking the ponytail, flip the ponytail over and pull it through.
  5. Once you have the twisted effect, tighten the ponytail. Slightly tease the ponytail.
  6. Roll it upwards and over the twist, starting from the bottom of the ponytail. Tuck the ends in and secure it with bobby pins. It’s alright if the chignon is a bit messy!
  7. If you want a sleek or slightly messy look, gently pull at the chignon to loosen it up.
  8. Taking one front section, twist and pull it across, pining it on the other side of the chignon. Repeat with the other front section. Next, tuck in any hair that sticks out into the side, pining it with a bobby pin.

Deep breathes! I know this one seems overwhelming initially, but it builds upon hairstyles like the twisted ponytail. For beginners looking to try a semi-complex hairstyle while also being time-friendly, a chignon hairstyle is the way to go. Still confused? Below is a link for a chignon tutorial by Jamison Shaw Hairdressers; she does an excellent job explaining how to execute this hairstyle.

5. Space Buns

Are you looking for a fun hairstyle but don’t want to do a bubble ponytail? Space buns are another creative hairstyle that is easy to do. This hairstyle is perfect for a day of shopping or going on a coffee date. This hairstyle can be as messy as you want it to be; there isn’t one right way to do space buns. It can also be customized; space buns can be done in a half up half down hairstyle or full-on space buns.

  1. Part the hair and create two even sections.
  2. Take one section and create a ponytail on one side of your head. Placement is up to the individual, play around with placements and see which ones work for you.
  3. There are two ways to create space buns. You can just wrap it around like a regular bun and fasten it with a hair band, or you can twist the hair and then wrap it around. The twist method is helpful if you have layers or thick hair.
  4. Repeat step three on the other side.
  5. Pull out front pieces to your liking and loosen the space buns if needed.

For the half up- half down space buns, do all these steps except gather less hair. You can make your space buns as big or little as you want!

6. Low Messy Bun with a Bandana

This cute hairstyle is perfect for when you want just to throw your hair up and go. Adding a bandana to a low messy bun can add fun pops of color to your outfit. It can also help on days when your hair is too greasy, and somehow you can’t find your dry shampoo in time. I like to put on the bandana first. However, you can put it in a messy bun before and add the bandana later.

  1. Tie the bandana underneath your hair. This can be done by lifting the hair or flipping your hair upside down for easier access.
  2. Once the bandana is tied, either twist or wrap your bun into place. Add bobby pins if necessary.

7. Halo Headband

This hairstyle is similar to the half up- half down hairstyle but has two pieces crisscrossing instead of one solid piece. This is a cute everyday look and takes less than a minute. You could customize this hairstyle by adding a pretty hair piece in the back.

1. Take two sections of hair from the front. Taking that piece, twist it and secure the hair in the middle with a bobby pin.

2. Repeat the same thing on the other hair section; secure this piece beneath the first section.

8. The Tuck In

Like the look of the chignon but don’t have much time? The tuck-in can be done within minutes, leaving you looking put together all day. For this hairstyle, you can use any headband, and a bandana might even be possible.

  1. Put on the headband of your choice.
  2. Add another headband, but over your hair instead of under.
  3. Tuck the hair over and under the headband that is over your hair.
  4. Slide the two headbands together, and you’ll only see the headband that is over the hair.
