17 Things Not Allowed In Ohio University Dorms (& What To Bring Instead)

Well, Bobcats, it’s getting that much closer to the time you’ve all been waiting for: move-in weekend. You’ve probably been staring at a tower of already-packed cardboard boxes for the past two weeks, and that’s great. There are a series of items, though, that you can’t take with you to Athens. To be as up-to-date as possible, and to make sure you don’t bring any unnecessary or restricted items with you, keep reading for 17 things not allowed in the Ohio University dorms (and what to bring instead)!

Instead of candles…

Gym shoes + unwashed clothes + odd food creations in the microwave = god-awful dorm odors. Although you can’t have candles to eliminate the issue, you can make your own odor-killer out of items you can pick up at the market or at a nearby grocery store (a cool DIY how-to can be found here).

Also, wax melters that use light bulbs and not metal plates are normally okay. If you want the no-effort, low-cost option, though, a simple can of air freshener will also get the job done.

Instead of an AC unit…

Although most dorms have AC, some don’t. And the ones that don’t get hella hot. Bring a desk fan or even a box fan if you know your dorm has no AC. You can find about your residence hall’s amenities here.

Instead of paint or wallpaper…

Posters, posters, posters. Try using Washi tape to make the posters stand out even more! An awesome video tutorial to help you can be found here. But not too many posters. Housing and Residence Life says only 25% of your walls can be covered. (How rude!) Also, nothing can go on the ceiling (which is a bummer to the cool few who may have already packed those glow in the dark plastic stars we used to attach to our ceilings when we were 8 and still wore footy pajamas).

Instead of your dog or cat from home…

There’s both a Petsmart and a Petland just a 10 minute drive from your dorm. Bring home a cute little betta. They’re filled with personality, require minimal maintenance, and are just friggin’ cool to watch swim around their bowls. You can also volunteer at a local animal shelter when you start missing your puppy; shelter animals need love, too!

Instead of paper lanterns…

Create your own string of glow lights with only a few cheap items. Watch this video tutorial for directions and tips here.

Instead of duct tape/masking tape…

Wall puddy. Wall puddy is the saviour of move-in weekend. Use it to keep your posters and decorations from sliding off your wall. Also, the higher-end option of wall decor fasteners would be command strips. They’re more expensive, but they’re great for heavier objects, like mirrors and bulletin boards. If you need some ideas, here is an entire article dedicated to decorating your room with command hooks.

Instead of a Space Heater…

Suck it up. When you’re living in your first house or apartment, you’ll likely have heat but not ever use it to keep your utility bill from spiking up. Buy some warm throw blankets from any store and add them to your bedding for extra dorm decor or hide them in a bin under your bed. Because winter is coming…
