Living with a roommate or two can be an amazing experience but it can also create extra drama and stress in your life where you do not need it. Having multiple people contributing to the rent and having people around all the time can help in different ways! Regardless of the great reasons, there are even more benefits to living alone. There is less hassle and less stress when it is only you!
Here are some reasons why living alone is not so bad after all!
1. No Roommates
Maybe you have heard roommate horror stories from your friends, or perhaps you have some of your own. Living alone means you do not have to worry about living with people you hate, who are messy, or are difficult to live with for long periods of time. The less you have to worry about, the better and happier you will be!
2. No Drama
Your days of worrying about the water and air conditioning bill spiking, stressing about your toiletries, food, and more being stolen are over. Instead of fighting over whose turn it is to wash the dishes, or vacuuming, you can do all of this on your own, whenever you want! Plus, those roommate fights never have to happen because you are all on your own.
3. Less Stress
Instead of having to nag your roommates to pay their share of the rent or utilities, or ask them for the tenth time to wash their dirty dishes, you can rest easy knowing everything is already taken care of! If you have been living with loud roommates who do not respect you or your sleep schedule, living alone is the dream.
4. You Can Live Where You Want
This applies to both the apartment or house of choice, as well as where your space is located! Instead of having to factor in other people, you are your only factor. You can choose to splurge and live in a nice space or choose to save money and save up to buy a home! If you do not mind a long commute to work, you could live further out if you wanted to.
5. You Can Move When You Want
If the company you work for wants you to relocate, you could move whenever you needed to! Maybe you want to go after your dream job or live in your dream city. Living alone means that you can pack up and move wherever you want, whenever you want! Plus, you will not feel guilty about leaving other people to cover your portion of the rent.
6. No Parents
This is perhaps one of the best parts of living alone. Instead of having to worry about following their rules, or doing household tasks when they want you to, you can do everything in your own time! You do not have to worry about fighting with them over silly things anymore. Living on your own means you are truly independent!
7. You Can Clean When You Want
Whether this means you clean first thing in the morning, before bed, or whenever you get to it, the choice is up to you! If you decide to leave the dinner dishes until the next day you can if that is what you want to do. You do not have to wait for your roommates to finish using the washer and dryer before washing sheets or clothes anymore either!
8. You Can Wear What You Want
If you want to walk around in your comfy clothes all the time, you can do that! Maybe you forgot to bring clean clothes to the bathroom to change into after your shower. You can sprint back to your bedroom without having to worry about anyone seeing you! Wear whatever makes you feel happy, comfortable, and confident.
9. You Can Eat What You Want
The days of your roommates complaining about how long it takes you to cook in the kitchen or how smelly your food is are over! Instead of having to deal with extra people in the kitchen, or pressure to eat things similar to what everyone else is eating, you can eat whatever you want without judgment. If you want to eat an entire pan of brownies with no one watching, go for it! Maybe eating extremely healthy is your thing and you want to cook all the time! No matter which side you fall on, you can eat whatever you want, whenever you want, with no one judging.
10. You Control Decorations
Perhaps you have had creative and aesthetic differences in the past with roommates in the past. Living alone means that you can decorate your space as much or as little as you like! You have complete control over the cost and quality of everything in addition to how it all looks.
11. You Can Have Friends Over
Instead of debating between talking to your roommates about when you plan to have guests over and just bringing them over whenever you choose, you no longer need to debate! Invite people whenever you like without worrying about inconveniencing or annoying other people. For the first time ever, you will finally have complete control over your social schedule.
12. No Rules
Simply put, no roommates, no rules! You can watch TV as loud and as long as you want, any time of the day and no one can stop you. Whether you choose to wash the dishes right after meals or save them for another time, you have no one to blame but yourself if you regret your decision the next morning.
13. You Can Have Pets
Maybe you have wanted a furry friend for some time but could not have one because of past living situations or because your roommates had allergies. Now you can bring pets into your space whenever you want! Just make sure it is okay with your landlord first.
14. Peace And Quiet After Work
There is nothing more satisfying or relaxing than coming home after a long day at work to peace and quiet. If you had a rough day, the last thing you want to do is talk to or see people when you get home. You can walk in the door, drop your belongings on the floor, and crash on the couch if you want! Plus, you can rest easy knowing you do not have to worry about anyone nagging you to talk or waking you up.
15. You’re A Real Adult Now
One of the best parts about living alone is that you will feel like a real adult! A majority of people spend years working away in an attempt to afford their own place. Some are too nervous about living alone because they do not want to be lonely. Just because you live alone, does not mean you will be lonely! This leap of faith is less scary than you think it is and is such a liberating experience.

Hi! My name is Hannah Warren and I just graduated from Mercer University with a B.A. in English. During my time at Mercer, I studied both Creative Writing and Media Studies so I have dabbled in multiple writing genres including fiction, nonfiction, playwriting, and more! Playwrighting and nonfiction are my favorite genres because more people relate to and understand the work when it is raw, genuine, and mentions different problems that most people are familiar with or have experienced first-hand. I have a bad habit of starting projects and not finishing them, but I am proud to say I am drafting a romance novel that I hope to have published one day! Thank you for taking the time to get to know me, and I hope you will continue to read more of my little articles in the future!
