10 Empowering Songs To Boost Your Mood

Having a rough day? Chances are if you’re down, you’re dealing with a broken heart. I’m there myself. I reached out to some friends a few weeks ago looking for some seriously empowering songs to help me feel better and they did not disappoint! Here are the top ten empowering songs they came up with!

Fight Song – Rachel Platten

Written by Platten herself, she says she wrote it to remind herself to not give up on the music industry. This was her breakout song after a decade of trying.

Verse:

This is my fight song
Take back my life song
Prove I’m alright song
My power’s turned on
Starting right now I’ll be strong
I’ll play my fight song
And I don’t really care if nobody else believes
‘Cause I’ve still got a lot of fight left in me

You Should Be Sad – Halsey

One of my newest favorites on this list of empowering songs!

Written by Halsey and Greg Kurstin. Rumor has it that the song was written about Halsey’s ex, G-Eazy.

Verse:

Oh, I feel so sorry
I feel so sad
I tried to help you
It just made you mad
And I had no warnin’
About who you are
I’m just glad I made it out without breakin’ down
And then ran so fuckin’ far
That you would never ever touch me again
Won’t see your alligator tears
‘Cause, no, I’ve had enough of them

Take A Bow – Rhianna

Written by Stargate and Ne-Yo. Written with the concept that the entire relationship was fake. If you’re struggling after breaking up with a narcissist, this will be the song for you. As you likely know, your narc put on quite a show, mirroring you and all your good qualities. Everything they said was a lie just to make themselves look good.

Verse:

But you put on quite a show
You really had me goin’
But now it’s time to go
Curtain’s finally closin’
That was quite a show
Very entertaining
But it’s over now
(But it’s over now)
Go on and take a bow

Warrior – Demi Lovato

Written by Lovato herself, it is rumored to be about the sexual abuse she experienced as a child. This song is reportedly about how she has overcome it and wears the scars it gave her with pride because it made her the woman she is today. This has never been confirmed by Lovato.

Verse:

‘Cause now I’m a warrior
Now I’ve got thicker skin
I’m a warrior
I’m stronger than I’ve ever been
And my armor is made of steel, you can’t get in
I’m a warrior
And you can never hurt me

Better Now – Post Malone

Written by Austin Richard Post / Carl Austin Rosen / Frank Dukes / Kaan Gunesberk / Louis Bell / William Thomas Walsh / Adam King Feeney. Rumored to be about a failed relationship in which he feels bad about his behavior.

Verse:

You probably think that you are better now, better now
You only say that ’cause I’m not around, not around
You know I never meant to let you down, let you down
Woulda gave you anything, woulda gave you everything
You know I say that I am better now, better now
I only say that ’cause you’re not around, not around
You know I never meant to let you down, let you down
Woulda gave you anything, woulda gave you everything, oh whoa

High Hopes – Panic! At The Disco

Written by Jake Sinclair and Jonas Jeberg, and co-written by Brendon Urie, Jenny Owen Youngs, Lauren Pritchard, Sam Hollander, William Lobban-Bean, Taylor Parks, and Ilsey Jube. The song is a reflection on the journey from failure to accomplishing one’s dreams. One of many truly empowering songs about living up to your own expectations.

Had to have high, high hopes for a living
Shooting for the stars when I couldn’t make a killing
Didn’t have a dime but I always had a vision
Always had high, high hopes
Had to have high, high hopes for a living
Didn’t know how but I always had a feeling
I was gonna be that one in a million
Always had high, high hopes

Girl – Maren Morris

Morris co-wrote the song with Sarah Aarons and its producer Greg Kurstin. A press release quotes Morris as saying, “‘GIRL’ started as a something I was saying to another woman, like, ‘We don’t need to be competitive with each other,’ and then I kind of realized that I was talking to myself.”

Written by P!nk herself and Greg Kurstin. Rumored to be about a toxic, and traumatic relationship. P!nk has definitely had a narcissist in her life.

I think I’ve finally had enough
I think I maybe think too much

Miss Me More – Kelsea Ballerini

Ballerini co-wrote the song with David Hodges and Brett McLaughlin. “In a lot of young relationships, you fall in love for the first time and you give every part of yourself to make it work,” Ballerini explained to the BBC. “But sometimes, when it’s not treated right, that’s how you lose yourself. I think it’s really a beautiful moment when you get to the other side, and you’re looking in the mirror and you’re like, ‘Huh, I thought I was going to miss him but – actually – I miss me!'” Ballerini is quoted as saying.

Verse:

But I miss me more
I miss my own beat, to my own snare drum
I miss me more
Miss my own sheets in the bed I made up
I forgot I had dreams, I forgot I had wings
Forgot who I was before I ever kissed you
Yeah, I thought I’d miss you
But I miss me more (I miss me more)

Dance Away My Broken Heart – Abby Anderson

Written by Kelsea Ballerini, along with songwriting giants Thomas Rhett, Rhett Akins, Ashley Gorley. “I heard it, and we cut it, like, a week later. And it was just so me. I’d had my heartbroken at the time, and I love to dance, and when I listened to it, I just thought, “Man, this is such a good live show song.” It’s just a jam, and it makes me happy.” said Anderson.

Verse:

Yeah, tonight I’m gonna dance away my broken heart
My broken heart, like I never even loved him
Throw my hands up when the music starts
Shake off these scars
Like he ain’t got nothing left on me
Gonna find a new rhythm till I forget him
Gonna move on till the memory fades
Yeah, tonight I’m gonna dance away my broken heart
My broken heart, oh Woah
